Cambodia´s Angkor Archaeological Park ends 2018 on a high with 2.6 million visitors

Angkor, one of the world’s most compelling archaeological sites and heritage complexes, comprising Hindu and Buddhist temples, is, unsurprisingly, Cambodia’s most visited tourist attraction. And this year it has registered a record number of visitors, up by 5.4 per cent from the previous year.

According to details released by Cambodia media earlier this month, the figure of international visitors that made it to Angkor Wat in 2019 nearly reached 2.6 million, generating over $100 million in revenue. And while the total number of arrivals points to an increase in visitors when compared to last year, when Angkor Wat received 2.59 visitors, it also points to an increase in revenue, with ticket sales having spiked by eight per cent (which translates into a $116.64 million total).

Covering some 400 square kilometres of compelling landscape, Angkor is considered one of South-East Asia’s most important archaeological sites with the Angkor Archaeological Park being home to the awe-inspiring remains of the Khmer Empire, spanning over 600 years of history from the 9th to the 15th century.

Here the most visited sites are the famous temples of Angkor Wat and the inspiring sculptural decorations of Bayon Temple at Angkor Thom, both declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites with programmes in place to safeguard their highly symbolic architectural and environmental riches, with the two elements (architecture and surrounding landscape) being intricately intertwined.

Cambodia holidays are becoming more popular than ever with the country’s tourism industry experiencing remarkable growth over the last few years as travellers flock to discover its unique natural and heritage riches.

When it comes to Angkor, many tourists come not just to admire the temple complexes and heritage sites but also to see the way of life at the villages scattered throughout the archaeological park and whose inhabitants are ancestors from the Angkor period. In more recent times, there has been a push by local tourism boards to show tourists eco-communities, learn about their sustainable practices and interact with locals.

During the first ten months of 2018, Cambodia saw the arrival of over 4.82 million international visitors, marking an increase of over 12 per cent when compared to the same period in the previous year. And next year the government is hoping for even higher, possibly record-breaking figures with a projected seven million visitors for 2019.

According to data released by Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism, tourism contributes to more than 10 per cent of the country’s national income, which is why an increase in visitors can only mean good news and which is also why you should maybe start considering a Cambodia holiday right about now. With striking landscapes, mesmerising ancient treasures, natural riches and beautiful beaches to match, what’s not to like?
