Dominican Republic joins the Central America Tourism Agency

Popular Caribbean beach destination the Dominican Republic has announced it has joined the Central America Tourism Agency (CATA) to further strengthen ties in the region's tourism industry. Alongside other members such as Costa Rica, Belize and Guatemala, the island nation hopes to foster multi-destination travel in the region.

Dominican Republic joins the Central America Tourism Agency

The Dominican Republic has joined the Central America Tourism Agency (CATA) – an association that represents tourism interests in seven Central American countries bordering the Caribbean Sea including Costa Rica, Belize, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Panama.

The Caribbean nation will become a fully-fledged member of the agency, strengthening links between the countries, fostering co-operation and further diversifying the region's multi-destination offering for UK travellers.

The Dominican Republic said it plans to participate and lend its full co-operation to the membership organisation, further enhancing the region's rich cultural, historical and natural offering for visitors. The synergies between the seven Central American nations and the Dominican Republic make this new partnership a natural fit, sharing cultural traditions, picturesque natural landscapes, local hospitality, pristine beaches and an archaeological legacy left by ancient civilisations.

The Dominican Republic's inclusion in CATA aims to further bolster the country's diverse tourism offering and encourage visitors to extend a Central America trip to the Dominican Republic and vice versa.

Already a popular beach holiday destination, the island nation recently released tourism figures indicating a successful first half of 2018. Data gathered by the Banco Central de la República Dominicana showed there was a 5.9% year-on-year increase in total visitors to the Dominican Republic between January and July this year.

According to the Dominican Republic Tourist Board, UK visitor arrivals for the first six months of this year have also risen by 7.8% compared to the same period in 2017.

Renowned for its Caribbean beaches including the renowned Bavaro Beach, tourist spots such as Punta Cana have also seen new resort openings this year adding to the island’s already substantial hotel capacity. The latest development is the new Grand Memories Punta Cana and Grand Memories Splash due to open in November 2018 after the former Memories Splash resort underwent a complete revamp to transform into two distinct resorts.
