Iberostar 100% eliminates disposable plastics in its Spanish properties

Mallorca-based hotel chain emporium, Iberostar has recently validated its commitment to protecting the environment by removing 100 percent of disposable plastics within the rooms of its properties in Spain. Room amenities have been replaced with alternative materials such as crystal and compostable cartons, in an attempt to move towards sustainable development.

Iberostar 100% eliminates disposable plastics in its Spanish properties

As climate change becomes a pressing concern for the planet, hospitality brands are getting on board to reduce impact on the environment. Iberostar, one of Spain’s most renowned hotel chains, has recently joined the trend with an amazing initiative to reduce contamination and contribute to recycling resources. The company proudly declared that all of its properties within the Iberian country would be free of single-use plastic by June this year.

The bold statement of removing disposable plastics in 100 per cent of its rooms in Spain demonstrates Iberostar’s commitment to sustainability. Throughout 2018, the hotel chain has been working hard to replace plastic room amenities with others that use biodegradable materials. One month from now, all of Spain’s 36 Iberostar properties will be oficially declared “Single-Use Plastic Free”.

Everything from shoe bags and clothing to minibar articles that were made with single-use plastic have been exchanged for other alternative materials, such as crystal, compostable cartons and renewable plant-based substances. This transformation is certain to have a very positive impact, as Iberostar will eliminate 1.5 million plastic bottles that are used in rooms every day, which then translates into 43 tonnes of plastic waste.

This project began in 2017, after the hotel chain underwent an internal audit to evaluate how many of its products contained plastic. A clear example is the elimination of plastic straws; after campaigning within its hotels to make clients and staff more aware of the problem and the importance of cutting back in plastic consumption, Iberostar has managed to replace the old articles with new biodegradable straws and has also reduced their use by 10 per cent (which represents a reduction of 10 million straws).

In addition to the plastic-free policy, the company also seeks to promote a more conscientious attitude towards the marine environment. Iberostar will partner up with NGO Oceanidas in two workshops that concentrate on cleaning the waters of the Iberian coast. Throughout June, the company will take part in the marine cleaning of Torrox in Malaga and the IV “Grand Limpieza Nacional” in Palma de Mallorca. Oceanidas carries out these initiatives every year with the help of diving centres and volunteers that spend a day removing waste and rubbish from the coast.

Finally, Iberostar has declared it plans to continue its eco-friendly policies, which are in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The “wave of change” initiative the group has begun is based on three key pillars: reducing plastic contamination, promoting sustainable fishing practices as well as preserving and protecting coral reefs and keeping the Mediterranean Sea clean.
