Lauryn Hill to headline St Kitts' summer music festival

The Caribbean island of St Kitts has announced the line-up for its annual music festival this summer will include multi-platinum R&B artist Lauryn Hill, as well as Grammy award-winning star Patti LaBelle and Jamaican dancehall singer Spice. The festival will take place from 27 June – 1 July 2018 at Warner Park Stadium in the island capital of Basseterre.

The live open-air festival, now in its 22nd year, has a history of hosting internationally-acclaimed artists and attracts both locals and visitors alike. It features a wide range of popular musical styles including R&B, jazz, hip-hop, reggae, soca, calypso, gospel and contemporary music.

A diverse range of past artists performing at the festival have included such prominent acts as John Legend, The Goo Goo Dolls, Lionel Richie, T-Pain, Michael Bolton, Wyclef Jean, Ne-Yo, Shaggy, Kelly Rowland, Toni Braxton, Sean Paul, Boyz II Men, Stephen Marley, Maxi Priest, Beres Hammond and Biggie Irie.

Headlining this year Patti LaBelle, known as the godmother of soul, has had a musical career spanning five decades that began in the early 1960s when she released iconic disco song Lady Marmalade. As a solo artist she has sold more than 50 million records worldwide, been inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame and won two Grammys.

Soul singer Lauryn Hill will also be performing a solo set on the main stage. She is most famous for her stint with The Fugees and multi-award winning solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which topped the American billboard charts and sold more than 8 million copies. Songs such as Doo Wop (That Thing) and Ex-Factor were huge hits that have stood the test of time.

Taking place around the same time, a fringe festival features additional events such as lunchtime concerts that primarily showcase the talent of local musicians and other cultural performers, Caribbean beach parties, scenic railway tours, boat rides, slam dunk contests and official after-parties.

Minister for Tourism, International Trade, Industry and Commerce, Lindsay Grant said:

“I’m extremely pleased to have such popular artists join the roster for the 2018 St Kitts Music Festival. This event has become well-known for featuring top internationally known acts along with local talent and for showcasing broad range of musical styles. It has proven to be a successful formula and one we are therefore continuing to follow.”

St. Kitts is located in the Caribbean’s northern Leeward Islands. The island's variety of tourism attractions include hiking through the tropical rainforest, riding the scenic railway that connects the island's former sugar plantations, visiting the Caribelle Batik factory, and touring Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, which is an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
