Sandals Resorts announces plans to build two new hotels in Tobago

Sandals Resorts International has announced that it will make its debut in the twin-island nation of Trinidad and Tobago. The hotel group signed a memorandum of understanding to develop two new hotels in Tobago under its Sandals and Beaches brand.

The Caribbean hotel group currently operates 16 hotels and resorts across the Caribbean, but this will be the first time they have built hotels in Tobago which sits in the southern Caribbean. Negotiations have been happening for the last year, and the move comes as part of an ongoing expansion plan in the region, which is a hotspot for holidaymakers.

Gordon “Butch” Stewart, the Chairman of Sandals Resorts International, stated:

“We look forward to being a part of the Tobago hotel community as it’s a place I have been interested in for 14 years.

“It’s an incredible island with warm people and they have a lovely hotel community. We have been very comfortable dealing with the various officials on the island and look forward to what the future holds.”

This will be the first new destination for the hotel group since it launched Sandals Barbados in 2015. The hotel group operates luxury all-inclusive resorts in tropical destinations such as St Lucia, Jamaica, Turks and Caicos, Antigua, Grenada, Barbados, and The Bahamas.

The Tobago Hotel and Tourism Association added:

"The majority of our members welcome Sandals coming to Tobago because of the additional flights and increased destination marketing which it would provide."

The twin-island nation of Trinidad and Tobago is located in the south Caribbean, 10km off the coast of Venezuela. Tobago sits 33km northeast of Trinidad, and both islands are popular tourist destinations for families, couples and nature lovers. The islands are home to magnificent attractions including the natural coral reef of Buccoo Reef, Caroni Bird Sanctuary, the Emperor Valley Zoo, Botanical Gardens, and Fort George.

Tobago is just 26 miles long and six miles wide, and is the tourism hub of the nation. The island boasts beautiful quiet palm-fringed beaches, turquoise waters, coral reefs that are thriving with vibrant marine species, and protected forest reserves. Trinidad is the business hub of the nation, but it is home an array of thriving nature parks, lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls, and the Asa Wright Nature Centre with vibrant butterflies, toucans, parrots, and iguanas.
