Royal Caribbean has announced that it will be expanding its CocoCay private island destination in the Caribbean. The new project will enhance facilities at the island in the Bahamas, and add a brand new pier which will accommodate Oasis class cruise ships.

The major enhancement programme will be carried out in different stages over the next two years, and ships will continue to stop at the island during the work. New guest facilities and services will be added, and there will be a push to help promote the culture of the Bahamas through local vendors, artists and craftsmen.

“Royal Caribbean has been a long-standing partner of the islands of The Bahamas and their plans to significantly increase tourism to our country as well as to develop the talent of our youth and expand employment opportunities for Bahamians is commendable.”

Commented Perry Christie, the Prime Minister of the Bahamas.

At the same time, Royal Caribbean also revealed details of its new training programme for Bahamians who are interested in entering the tourism and hospitality sector. Working with the Bahamas government, the programme will help train students in various careers within the cruise industry.

The cruise line also said it is committed to:

“Rapidly growing the number of Bahamian nationals employed by the cruise line in the next five years.”

At present, Royal brings 1.7 million international visitors to the Bahamas every year on its cruise ships.

CocoCay is a private island located in the Berry Islands archipelago near Nassau in the Bahamas. The island is home to several lifeguard-patrolled beaches, such as The Snorkel Beach, Watersports Beach, Coconut Willy's Beach and Barefoot Beach.

Visitors can enjoy the floating playground at Caylanas Aqua Park, slide down the inflatable waterslide, go kayaking or parasailing, scuba dive to sunken vessels, or take a guided nature walk around the trail. The Straw Market is full of vendors selling local crafts and souvenirs, and there’s also a spa massage centre on the island. There are a variety of bars and restaurants where tourists can enjoy delicious food and refreshing alcoholic or soft drinks.

Royal Caribbean Cruises is the second-largest cruise line operator in the world, and was founded in 1997. The Miami-based company operates cruises under five brands, including Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Pullmantur Cruises, Azamara Club Cruises, and CDF Croisieres de France.
