Malta Airport tops list of World's Top 10 Scenic Airport Approaches

A list of the world’s most scenic airport approaches has been compiled by using votes from thousands of travellers from all over the globe.

The Top 10 Most Scenic Airport Approaches of 2016 list was topped by Malta Airport in Malta in the Mediterranean, and included airports in the Caribbean, the United States, France, Ireland, Canada and the UK.

Speaking about Malta, Joe Sharkey, judge of the list, said:

“Approached from a churning blue sea, the tiny, isolated rocky island nation suddenly appears and you immediately understand Malta’s strategic geopolitical importance for literally millennia by sea and later air in the middle of the Mediterranean,”

Malta is an island nation archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea that is made up of the isles of Malta, Gozo, Comino, Comminotto and Filfla. The beautiful island sits between the island of Sicily in Italy and North Africa, and is home to stunning beaches, azure waters, and historic buildings.

Valletta, the capital of Malta, is a fortress city on the rock of Mount Sceberras peninsula, named after its founder Jean Parisot de la Valette, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Travellers can visit historic sites including St John’s Cathedral, forts, bastions, baroque churches, palaces, and squares. The main stretch has boutique shops, designer stores, cafes, and Hastings Gardens.

Two Caribbean airports were also included in the list: St Maarten Airport in St Maarten, which was ranked in eighth place and combines white sandy beaches with close-ups of Boeing 747s flying directly overhead, and Saba (Juancho E. Irausquin) Airport, which reached fifth place, and has the world’s shortest commercial runway resulting in an abrupt stop for passengers but there are breath taking sea views.

London City Airport and Barra Airport in the UK were both listed. Judge, Adam Twidell spoke of Barra saying:

“A unique opportunity to land on a tidal beach runway, this really is an out-of-this-world arrival into Scotland’s outer Hebrides.”

Other airports that made the Top 10 list included Nice Cote D’Azur Airport, France, Queenstown Airport, New Zealand, Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, Canada, Donegal Airport, Ireland, and Los Angeles International Airport, USA.
