Out of all the Caribbean holiday destinations, Bahamas seems to be the favourite amongst passengers looking for cruising holidays in the Caribbean, according to a report disclosed by the Cruise Lines International Association.

Bahamas holidays still a favourite for cruise travellers

As it turns out cruise ship passengers still prefer embarking on Bahamas holidays and discovering these Caribbean islands through cruising journeys as the destination was recognised as the top choice for cruise travellers this year, according to an international report.

Such information on which Caribbean holiday destinations proved more popular for cruising was revealed during the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) 2010 market overview of the cruise industry, which provided an analysis of the sector for the first half of the year from a global standpoint.

The report projected that, based on volume of sales from last year, cruising Bahamas holidays emerged once again as the top travel Caribbean destination, ahead of regions such as the Mediterranean and Europe. It also mentioned that so far in 2010 the country accounts for almost half of the occupancy rate of fleets associated with CLIA.

"From a capacity standpoint, utilization is consistently over 100 percent. In 2009 the CLIA industry occupancy rate was 103.9 percent. For 2010 the Caribbean and Bahamas represent the number one destination with 41.3 percent of capacity deployment. The Mediterranean, Europe, Alaska, and Mexico follow the Caribbean in popularity." - the report stated.

The Bahamas holidays industry also ranked among the highest holiday destinations in total bed days so far this year, coming in fourth place in total bed-days at 6.8 million, which marks a 31 % increase from last year. Only Caribbean holidays in general, the Mediterranean and Europe had higher amounts.

Visitors arriving to Bahamas holidays by cruise have been relatively consistent for this Caribbean island, with over 1 million tourists voyaging by sea in the first quarter. Out of those passengers, 54 % make Nassau or Paradise Island their destination while 35 % go to the Family Islands, and 11 % travel to Grand Bahama.

CLIA is associated with nearly 16,000 travel agencies and individual agents and 25 cruise lines that include a host of ships that offer services to the country. The organisation reported a total of 14.3 million cruising passengers this year. The industry is still ranked first among travel consumers for perceived value, holiday interest and ease in selling for travel agents.
