When is the best time to visit Fujairah?

Fujairah's climate

Blissfully blue skies are the norm in Fujairah all year round with an average annual temperature of 27 degrees Celsius - perfect for a beach holiday. It's also the ideal winter destination for those who like to escape to the sunny side when the UK is at its chilliest. In fact, Fujairah is rarely too cold, though it can get too hot. In high summer, temperatures can climb above 40 degrees Celsius making outdoor activities difficult.

The emirate has a typically hot dry desert climate but it gets slightly more rainfall than the rest of the UAE owing to its mostly mountainous terrain. Moisture is trapped by the high Hajar mountains resulting in more precipitation and greener, more fertile valleys in Fujairah. Even so, the emirate only averages around 100mm of rainfall per year.

The best time to visit Fujairah

Either side of summer between autumn and spring are the most pleasant times of year to visit Fujairah, when temperatures are hot but not scorching. You can spend long days luxuriating in the balmy climate at the beach and explore some of the region's natural and cultural attractions such as its renowned scenic wadis, mountain springs, castles and mosques. The climate is mildest between December and March when the thermometer tends to hover in the mid-twenties, but at this time of year temperatures drop steeply at sunset. If you are out in the desert or on the coast after dark, you will probably need an extra layer.

Public holidays and religious festivals

Ramadan is observed all over the UAE and Fujairah is no exception. During this Islamic holy month most businesses such as restaurants and shops are closed during the daytime, and locals follow strict rules such as going without food and water until sunset. Some activities such as desert tours are affected and tourist attractions may have limited opening hours so it's not a good time to travel if you wish to explore outside of your holiday resort. However, most hotels and resorts function as normal during Ramadan, so if you are going on an all-inclusive beach holiday, you may not notice any difference at all. The dates of Ramadan shift every year, so it's best to check before you decide to travel.

The culmination of Ramadan is the vibrant festival of Eid Al Fitr full of feasting and festivities and offering a great glimpse of local culture. Another public holiday, Eid Al Adha is celebrated for four days between October and November and it can be a very pleasant time to visit Fujairah with a buoyant friendly atmosphere. Keep in mind, though, that transport and businesses are limited during public holidays.

Practical tips

For most of the year Fujairah is very hot so it's advisable to pack lightweight clothing for your visit. Natural fabrics such as cotton and linen are best. If you plan to go sightseeing then sunglasses, hats and thin scarves may all help protect you from the sun's glare. In winter (between December-March) temperatures can drop dramatically at night in the desert and along the coast, so bring a cardigan, jumper or light jacket if you plan to travel at this time of year.
