Duration: Half Day

Meet Cyprus - Pitsilia Tour

If you are staying in or around the city of Limassol during your holiday in Cyprus, don’t miss the chance to explore the beautiful mountain villages of Pitsilia. Public transport is infrequent, so it is best to rent a car or hire a taxi, but this is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the heart of Cypriot village life whilst enjoying some of the most spectacular scenery on the island.

Located in the foothills of the impressive Troodos mountain range, east of Mount Olympos, the picturesque region of Pitsilia is known as the orchard of Cyprus. Relatively Alpine in nature, jagged mountain tops and steep slopes give way to lush green valleys and peaceful villages, whilst the landscape is dotted with pine forests, vineyards and fruit trees, and blanketed with a myriad of brightly-coloured flowers in the springtime. Wild roses, grapes, olives, almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, bay trees and the endemic Gold Oak are just some of the fruits and plants that thrive in these remote hills due to Cyprus’ year-round mild climate.

Around 40 different villages are located in this region, some of which date back hundreds of years and have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Lagoudera Village dates back to the 12th Century and is one of the most important sites in Cyprus, whilst Palaiochori Village is mentioned in records from the 13th Century. Some of the most striking features you will notice on your journey include the traditional stone houses with their red-tiled roofs and wooden balconies, historic monasteries and beautiful Byzantine churches, many of which have been included on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List.

A walk through the villages will give you a fascinating insight into the cultural heritage of the region, all of which form an important part of daily life. Many of the local people produce their own wine here, which is amongst the best on the island, as well as other delicious produce such as honey and cheeses. A number of old houses have been restored and turned into charming cafes or restaurants.

Relax and enjoy a drink with the hospitable local villagers whilst immersing yourself in the charming rural surroundings. This tranquil haven is a wonderful place to visit at any time of the year, but Pitsilia is particularly popular in the summer. Many villages host their own events and festivals at this time, combining live music and traditional dancing with plenty of food and wine. This is a wonderful authentic experience not to be missed.
