A guide to holidays in St Kitts and Nevis

A bit about St Kitts and Nevis

St Kitts and Nevis might not be the largest of Caribbean nations, but it is one of the region's most striking holiday spots. These isles are home to a variety of landscapes and attractions that make them popular among all kinds of travellers.

Despite being spotted by Columbus in 1493, the islands weren't colonised until 1623 when the Brits took control and turned it into one of the most important colonial destinations in the Caribbean. Nowadays, it's not as famous as some of its neighbours but that simply adds to its appeal - it's got pristine beaches, charming towns, beautiful rainforests and even a dormant volcano, everything you could want for a getaway to remember.

Holidays in St Kitts and Nevis are perfect for those seeking luxury, as so many of the resorts here are at the top end of the spectrum. What's more, the islands are strongly focused on ecotourism, ensuring that the environment isn't damaged as a result of development.

On St Kitts, all land above an altitude of 1,000 ft has been declared a National Forest Reserve, which protects the majority of the island's rainforests. The isle is also working towards setting up a series of Marine Protected Areas to ensure its stunning coral reefs stay in pristine condition.

Have a vibrant holiday on St Kitts

St Kitts is the perfect place to stay if you're looking for a relaxing break with a little bit of everything. One of the most popular areas of the island is Frigate Bay, which can broadly be divided into north and south.

The north of Frigate Bay is the most developed part of the island and is home to a wide selection of hotels. Head further south, and you'll find things are a little quieter, although there is still an excellent range of bars and restaurants for you to frequent.

Bonfires, open-air dance parties and beach-side DJs are among the entertainment you can find when the sun goes down in this part of the island. During the day, meanwhile, you can have a go at a host of water sports, including scuba diving, jet skiing, windsurfing, kayaking and many more. This makes Frigate Bay the best place to head to if you're after an active holiday with plenty of amenities close at hand.

Uncover local culture in Basseterre

Basseterre, the capital of St Kitts and Nevis, is just a short drive from Frigate Bay and, like many Caribbean cities, has a vibrant atmosphere. It's a fantastic example of a colonial Caribbean city, having been founded by the French and developed with the assistance of the English. There are still plenty of colonial buildings to seek out in the jumble of streets, with Independence Square, the Immaculate Conception Cathedral and the Old Treasury Building (which now houses the National Museum) among the top sights to look out for.

Another must-visit in Basseterre is the Circus, which is a roundabout inspired by London's Piccadilly Circus. At its centre is the Victorian-style Berkeley Memorial Clock.

Outside the capital is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Brimstone Hill Fortress. This military enclave is one of the largest and most impressive in the Caribbean. It has been restored and offers a fantastic glimpse into the era of colonial expansion in the islands, not to mention outstanding views from its hilltop location.

Even if you don't stay in Basseterre itself, make sure you give yourself at least a day to explore its charming streets and to mingle with the locals.

Choose Nevis for ultimate luxury

Over on Nevis you'll find a selection of top-quality luxury hotels where you can really relax and unwind. Charleston, Nevis's capital, is considered to be home to the best resorts in St Kitts and Nevis, while the coastline is littered with amazing sandy beaches and secluded coves.
