Luxor Holidays

Luxor
Overview

Holidays in Luxor are a chance to immerse yourself in a veritable open-air museum, with temples, tombs and monuments dotting the region. The city itself is buzzing with activity, allowing a Luxor holiday to fuse both old and new with magical results. Tour the Valley of Queens on the West bank, visit the tomb of Tutankhamun and soak up the magic on a memorable sunset cruise along the mighty Nile. When evening rolls around, catch the sound and light show at Karnak and have your camera ready to capture the Luxor temple all lit up, before indulging in a delicious meal by the waterfront. This colourful city is perfect for culture lovers who can't wait to explore what history left behind – before basking on the beautiful golden beaches, of course. There is plenty for children to do too, with unforgettable boat rides on the great River Nile available.

The best time to visit Luxor is from October to May, when the weather is quite pleasant, streets are filled with lively touristy vibe and interesting nightly entertainment. That’s exactly when you see many tourists strolling around the banks of river Nile; some are busy soaking the natural beauty whereas others are ready to embark on their Nile Cruise! The nearest airport is Luxor International Airport, which is just 6 kilometres away from the city. From the airport, you have multiple options to reach the city/your hotel through an airport shuttle, bus or a taxi.

Getting Around

It’s easy to hail a taxi in Luxor, but remember there are no meters, so you have to get familiar with the rates. Navigate between the East and West banks of Luxor by boat or the traditional felluca, with a taxi usually waiting on the other side. Motorcycles are an efficient way to get around, especially in the mountainous areas. Bicycle rentals are popular, especially in the quieter rural West Bank side, but do check the tyres before hiring! They can also be carried on board the local ferry. There are also mini-buses with fixed routes that are available for tourists.

Luxor's Ancient Attractions

Luxor's Ancient Attractions

Luxor’s ancient attractions are its main draw and there's certainly plenty to choose from. There's the majestic and the Karnak Temple Complex on the city’s east Bank, and the iconic Valley of the Kings on the west. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even see the ancient sights from up high on a hot air balloon! After all the sightseeing, hop onto a felucca and sail down the Nile to Banana Island and on the way back you’ll be treated to the most glorious sunset over the river. If you've got time to kill, enjoy a stroll along the Sharia al-Corniche, a beautiful riverside walkway that runs from Luxor to Karnak, scattered with shops for you to browse as you go.

Taste the Flavours of North Africa

Taste the Flavours of North Africa

Whether it’s rolled falafel or tasty kebabs, North African cuisine is mouth-wateringly good. The restaurants on the East Bank, such as Sofra on Mohamed Farid Street, are exceptional and offer authentic fare at reasonable prices. Besides dishes like stuffed duck and rabbit, you can also relax over some minty tea or Shai bi-na'ana at a cafe, play a game of dominoes and smoke a shisha as you watch the sun set.
