More and more often, people are making decisions based on how Instagrammable it will be – from where to get coffee, what to wear every day, and even where to go on holiday. In fact, 40% of millennials will choose a travel destination based on its Instagrammability, making it the number one motivator when planning a holiday.
With this in mind, The Holiday Place decided to have a look at some of the most Instagrammable islands around the world, to help you decide where to travel to next, and keep your Instagram feed up to date at the same time. At The Holiday Place, we pride ourselves in offering luxury holidays to exotic locations around the world, catering for families, solo travellers, couples, honeymoons and now, Instagram-fanatics.
We appreciate the beauty and paradise of the world’s most amazing islands, which is why we offer holidays to so many of them. So, we decided to conduct this study to give a small insight into the aesthetically pleasing capitals of the world, and hopefully encourage others to marvel at their beauty as well.
We put together our study by first compiling a list of all the holiday islands around the world, which totalled 135 islands, using a variety of trusted travel sources and expert opinions. For each of these islands, we determined the most used hashtags concerning the island itself, and calculated how many times each hashtag had been used. These included tags such as “#mallorcaisland” and “#skiathos_island”.
We totalled the multiple hashtags for individual islands together to find the total sum of posts for each island. We then ranked the islands according to their final total, and selected the top 27 most popular islands.
In the top spot was Mallorca, with an impressive 8,530,019 hashtags in total. In second place was, unsurprisingly, the Maldives, with a hefty 6,432,364 hashtags next to its name. We were thrilled to see this destination rank so highly, as well as our other destinations of Bali, Cozumel, Seychelles, and Koh Tao, having long been knowledgeable about the unrivalled beauty and incredible wildlife that abound on the islands.
Following Mallorca, the top 10 most photogenic islands according to Instagram are:
- The Maldives
- Gran Canaria
Mallorca is a go-to destination for a myriad of reasons; not only is it a fairly easy plane journey from a lot of countries around the world, but as the largest of the Balearic Islands it is so much more than just sunshine and beaches – although this certainly helps the island’s popularity. It is home to limestone spires and bluffs, vineyards that turn golden in the autumn months, hilltop monasteries, honey-stone villages and so much more.
The country has a culture that stretches back for generations, noticeable in the old manor houses, country estates, and farmhouses, abandoned for years but slowly being turned into refined countryside retreats. Of course, the stunning coastline is a major pull to the destination, and “mallorcabeach” has 24,610 hashtags alone. Indeed, the beaches have everything, from dramatic cliff lines, to bone-white beaches, bright blue seas, and deserted coves.
Coming in second was the Maldives, which we know personally to be the ultimate paradise. A hit for honeymooners, families, couples, and solo travellers, it’s not hard to see why. With nearly 1200 islands as part of the Maldives chain, there is nowhere on earth as consistently perfect as the Maldives. From the softer-than-feather beaches, luminous blue water, to the tropical hideaways, and reef sharks friendly enough to paddle with, there is no end to the beauty that brings over a million people a year to these tiny little islands.
Other destinations we were excited to see rank in the top 20 were Bali, Cozumel, the Seychelles, and Koh Tao, with an impressive 1,872,585, 1,401,943, 1,028,057, and 909,557 hashtags respectively. The high scores for these islands were likely because of the paradisiacal evocations of each of them. Bali for the rich, diverse culture, dramatic volcanoes and hillside temples, and the luxurious beach side resorts. Isla Cozumel for its mix authentic neighbourhoods side by side Mayan ruins, cliffside bars, and the unforgettable sandy beaches. The Seychelles for the sparkling topaz waters, exciting shipwrecks, white sand beaches, secluded coves, pink sunsets, and everything else that makes this island the “Galapagos of the Indian Ocean”. And Koh Tao for its options to dive with sharks and rays, hike up mountains and sip champagne on the pure white beach.
