Punta Cana Resort and Club Wins Prestigious Conde Nast Awards

Winners of the Conde Nast Traveler 2009 World Savers Awards have been announced after carefully reviewing over 100 applications and deciding on the 36 finalists.

The World Savers Awards, now in their third year running, honour travel companies from all over the world and acknowledge their ability to act as leaders towards social responsibility within five vital areas: wildlife conservation, health initiatives, cultural and environmental preservation, education programmes, and poverty alleviation.

This year's winners include the Punta Cana Resort and Club who won an award for their Education Programs. The luxury resort differs from most Dominican Republic hotels and resorts by building schools to accommodate its workers and their children to help develop their skills. Punta Cana Resort and Club then went on to receive an award within the Large Resorts category.

The Haciendas hotel chain, who is situated in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, won an award for their outstanding efforts to alleviate poverty. The chain, which has Cancun hotels and properties scattered along the Yucatan Peninsula, renovates abandoned haciendas turning them into stylish resorts, whilst employing local villagers as waiters, accountants, and construction workers. Help is also given to local villagers looking to start their own businesses.

A panel of 20 judges made up of non-government organisations and experts in the travel industry, had to decide who would win the awards in the eight different travel company categories: City hotels: cruise lines, small hotel chains, large hotel chains, tour operators, small lodges and resorts, large lodges and resorts, and airlines.

Other winners awarded for their contribution towards holidays and tourism included, Japan Airlines, Gap Adventures, Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, Willard InterContinental, and Ecoventura.

Klara Glowczewska, Editor-in-Chief of Conde Nast Traveler, said:

"Despite these challenging economic times, corporate social responsibility is as important as ever."
"The travel industry is on track to generate $7.3 trillion in revenue this year -- a number that represents an enormous opportunity improve our planet, and our World Savers Awards recognize those companies turning that potential into a reality."

The 2009 World saver Awards winners will be officially revealed in September's edition of Conde Nast Traveler magazine which is out on August 25, and an awards ceremony will take place at the annual Conde Nast Traveler World Savers Congress in New York City on September 21.
