Louvre Abu Dhabi to officially open to the public in November

The long-anticipated opening of the Abu Dhabi Louvre has been revealed, following several years of delays. The universal museum will open to the public on 11th November, 2017, and will be the first of its kind on the Arab region.

Located in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, the museum has been designed by Pritzker Prize winning French architect Jean Nouvel. The museum city (Arab medina) is located under a huge silver metal dome that is made up of nearly 8,000 metal stars that have been put together in a unique geometric pattern.

Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, the Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority, stated:

“Louvre Abu Dhabi embodies our belief that nations thrive on diversity and acceptance, with a curatorial narrative that emphasises how interconnected the world has always been.

“The museum represents the latest innovation in a long-standing tradition of cultural preservation nurtured by the founding leaders of the UAE.”

The museum will focus on the civilisations and cultures of the region, via shared human stories, and it will feature a vast collection of artwork and artefacts that will be loaned from some of the best museums in France. These include prehistorical objects and contemporary artworks that date back to the beginning of human existence.

Visitors to the Louvre Abu Dhabi can walk along the promenade that overlooks the sea beneath the 180-metre-high dome. The pattern of the dome allows sunlight to filter through, creates a moving "rain of light" that resembles the overlapping palm trees in the oases of the United Arab Emirates.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi will also carry a message of tolerance and peace, and signifies the commitment of France and Abu Dhabi to help promote culture and education to protect against extremism. The museum’s galleries will feature loaned artwork from 13 leading museums in France. These include Leonardo da Vinci’s La Belle Ferronniere on loan from Musee du Louvre, and Vincent van Gogh’s self-portrait from the Musee d’Orsay et de l’Orangerie.

Manuel Rabate, the Director of Louvre Abu Dhabi, commented:

“With a unique global narrative and a vision to explore the history of art in a fresh context, Louvre Abu Dhabi is a place where visitors can come to understand their own and others’ cultures.

“Its ground-breaking architecture complements a presentation of exceptional treasures that represent a snapshot of humanity’s creativity, and paves the way for new discussions.”

The opening of the Louvre Abu Dhabi will include a variety of public events, such as symposiums, concerts, dance performances, and visual arts. The museum’s inaugural exhibition, "From One Louvre to Another: opening a museum for everyone", opens to visitors on 21st December 21st, and is based on the history of Musee du Louvre in Paris.
