The Latin American construction company Grupo Zalago is planning to open the first Yoo-branded hotel in the Caribbean. Scheduled to open in 2019, the Yoo Santo Domingo will be a boutique hotel in the Dominican Republic with 121 condo units.

Located next to the high end Blue Mall shopping centre in the middle of Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, the luxury hotel will provide easy access to upscale designer shops including Cartier, Louis Vuitton, Bvlgari.

The lead architect for the development, will be Simples Arquitectura which was co-founded by Antonio Segundo Imbert. Imbert will design the 14-story building which will feature the only landscaped rooftop in Santo Domingo. The one-bedroom units will have modern kitchens, and the design and décor will be created by Italkraft, an upscale Italian design company based in Miami, which specialises in kitchens, bathrooms and wardrobes. The property is also expected to have a selection of gourmet restaurants and stylish bars.

The Yoo brand was established in 1999 by the renowned designer Philippe Starck and the international property entrepreneur John Hitchcox. The international lifestyle brand operates residential, hotel and leisure developments.

Santo Domingo is one of the oldest cities in the Caribbean and it was the first inhabited European settlement in the New World. The city successfully blends the old with the new, and is considered to be one of the Caribbean’s most cosmopolitan cities. Divided by the Ozama River, the city is home to Victorian houses, tree-lined streets, luxury hotels, and casinos, as well as historic monuments and attractions such as Columbus's Lighthouse, where the remains of world-famous explorer Christopher Columbus are buried, plus the open caves of the Parque Nacional Los Tres Ojos.

The Colonial Zone is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and holidaymakers will find several examples of preserved 15th and 16th century architecture, such as the Iglesia Regina Angelorum and the Convento de los Dominicos. Popular attractions in Santo Domingo include the Alcazar de Colon museum, Museum of Duarte, and the Museo del Ron Dominicano which becomes a rum bar after hours. The city also offers a vibrant nightlife with an array of stylish bars, night clubs and restaurants.
