Jordan desert dome camps approach travellers to “The Martian” experience

Comprising sandstone and granite rock formations, the Wadi Rum desert in Jordan is the closest place to Mars (at least in appearance) on Earth. After designing the set for 2015 Oscar-winning film “The Martian”, Freedomes created smaller versions of this domed habitat and now travellers can visit for an experience that is out of this world.

Jordan desert dome camps approach travellers to “The Martian” experience

Though travelling to Mars is quite far from becoming a valid holiday option, visiting an earthly territory resembling the Red Planet’s sandy surface is now possible. Renowned design company, Freedomes has lined the scarlet-coloured sand of Jordan’s desert with domes to recreate the survival of a human being in Mars. Tourists looking for a planetary experience can now book a stay in one of these facilities.

Due to its crimson colour and rocky consistency, Jordan’s desert in Wadi Rum inspired filmmakers to transform it into the set of the successful Hollywood blockbuster “The Martian”. This Oscar-winning film released in 2015 tells the story of a man that remains trapped in Mars for years and must survive within his dome until rescued.

Better known for their DIY backyard dome kits, Freedomes was responsible for designing the domed habitat astronaut Mark Watney survives in for “The Martian” set design. After the film caused great sensation all over the world, the company decided to create twenty smaller geodesic dome structures in replica of the one presented in the film to allow curious travellers the chance to explore and feel as if they visited the Red Planet.

The replicas have been set up at SunCity Camp in Wadi Run. Close to where the film was shot, this stunning desert possesses sandstone and granite rock formations that look very much like the surface of Mars. Each dome comprises a private bathroom and panoramic window for a sweeping view of this red sandy wonder. The camp also boasts a restaurant serving Bedouin meals like zarb, or lamb cooked beneath the desert sand.

Another interesting aspect to "The Martian” experience is the opportunity of receiving guided tours of the Wadi Rum from friendly Bedouins. Approximately 5,000 Bedouins reside in this desert, which they call the Valley of the Moon. With their deep knowledge of the desert, these individuals are semi-nomadic and sometimes still live in tents. Though the cost of this adventure remains unknown, the prices of other tent accommodations in SunCity range from $159 to $318 per night.
