Nickelodeon's Undersea Resort coming to Southeast Asia

A remarkable underwater Nickolodeon-themed resort is in the works. Viacom recently announced that the new resort, located on Palawan Island, will feature underwater accommodations and attractions, including SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The resort will be the second Nickolodeon-themed resort in Asia.

Nickelodeon's Undersea Resort coming to Southeast Asia

Viacom recently announced that its Nickelodeon-themed resort brand is coming to Southeast Asia. The new resort, which will be located in the Philippines, features an interesting innovation: it will be underwater.

The resort will feature well-known characters from the children’s network, including SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The development is planned to cover 70 hectares of accommodations and will include 30 hectares of attractions. The resort will offer a one-off-a-kind dining experience—underwater restaurants and lounges 20 feet below sea level.

The development is part of Coral World Park Undersea, a larger resort that is expected to open in several phases beginning in 2018. The opening of the Nickelodeon portion is planned for 2020.

The property will be spread across numerous islands which are between 5 and 20 minutes apart by speedboat. The resort will offer a multi-island experience which includes hot springs, island-hopping, lagoons, an animal reserve, and shipwreck diving. Coral World Park will also feature the world’s largest coral reef conservation project in Asia, as well as a marine sanctuary for dolphins, sea cows, sea horses, turtles, and whale sharks.

The new resort is planned for Palawan Island, which is home to what many consider to be the Philippines’ most beautiful beaches. The development is not without controversy, however, as the island is also home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, a subterranean river, and the Tubbataha coral reefs. Greenpeace believes that the location of such a resort on Palawan Island will be damaging to the area’s delicate ecology. Developers argue that the underwater resort will actually promote conservation.

Palawan was named Best Island in the World in 2014 by Travel + Leisure. Roughly and hour-and-a-half from Manila, the island is often referred to as “the last frontier” because of its relative isolation, pristine beaches, and diverse and rare wildlife.

The resort will be Nickelodeon’s second theme park in Asia. The first was Nickelodeon Lost Lagoon, which opened in 2016 in Malaysia. Developers broke ground in early January for another Nickelodeon resort in Foshan, China.
