Luxury resort Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort opens in Oman

Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas announced the opening of Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort in Oman. The resort, a two-hour drive from Muscat International Airport (MCT), is the tallest five-star resort in the Middle East. It towers 2,000 metres above sea level.

Perched on the rim of a canyon, simply arriving at the resort is an experience. The location was, for many years, inaccessible, and requires a drive past date plantations, historic forts, and the dry riverbeds known locally as wadis.

The resort includes 115 luxury rooms and villas, each with a breath-taking view over the canyon or the resort’s lush gardens. There are also 82 Premier and Deluxe Canyon View rooms, with spacious bedrooms and decadent, spa-like bathrooms. As if the rain showers are not indulgent enough, the rooms also include a separate bath adjacent to a balcony. For an even more decadent experience, the one- or two-bedroom villas come complete with a private infinity pool and personal villa host services.

Visitors to Oman with a taste for fine dining may find it difficult to tear themselves away from the resort’s six restaurants and lounges. Al Maisan offers a host of international cuisines and boasts live cooking stations for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Bella Vista offers Roman-inspired cuisine as well as expansive views of the canyon. For those who want to experience local cuisine, Al Qalaa specializes in Omani dishes, while tapas is the speciality of the Moroccan-influenced Al Burj.

Perhaps the most unique dining experience at the resort is its “Dining by Design” experience, which allows guests to enjoy a meal on a cliff-edge platform. Princess Diana visited the exact spot, which overlooks the Green Mountain, in 1986 and it has been known as Diana’s Point since that time.

Beyond its culinary delights, Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort offers a range of activities for guests. More adventurous guests can scale the side of the cliff on the “via ferrata” climbing route. The numerous valleys and trails offer excellent opportunities for hiking and mountain biking. History and culture aficionados will marvel at the numerous nearby heritage sites. There is also a star-gazing platform for those who want to turn their gaze skyward.

Oman is still a bit off the beaten path for many travellers, but Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort is certain to become a popular destination in the mountains of northern Oman
