Ritz-Carlton staff saves holiday for traveller in Oman

A lesser-known corner of the Arab world, Oman is still largely undiscovered by tourists. But the country offers a wealth of charm and natural beauty, from towering mountain ranges to pristine coastlines, all with the scent of frankincense in the air. At the Al Bustan, a Ritz-Carlton property, one guest’s holiday in Oman was salvaged by quick-thinking hotel staff.

Ritz-Carlton staff saves holiday for traveller in Oman

For most travellers, a camera and a memory stick are essential elements of a successful holiday. Losing one’s camera on holiday would be a bummer for anyone, and that’s what recently happened to a guest at Oman’s Al Bustan Palace, a Ritz-Carlton Hotel. While snorkelling in the Gulf of Oman and photographing it’s colourful, exotic marine life, one hapless traveller dropped his camera and his photographic record of the trip.

The Ritz-Carlton is famous throughout the world for its above-and-beyond approach to guest service, but two of the Al Bustan’s staff truly outdid themselves. Upon hearing of the guest’s misfortune, the staff members donned scuba suits and dove into the depths of the Gulf of Oman to retrieve his camera. The guest was reunited with his camera a short while later, and his holiday was saved.

The story of the scuba diving hotel staff was one of a series of real guest stories which detail the well-known Ritz-Carlton treatment of their guests. It was part of a Room No. 8 event in London, a five-day experience produced in conjunction with GQ and Vogue. The event was a sort of virtual trip around the world through the eyes of satisfied Ritz-Carlton guests, including the gentleman whose camera was nearly lost in the deep.

Al Bustan Palace is located near the Gulf of Oman at the base of the Al-Hajar Mountains. The property is one of the most opulent in the Ritz-Carlton portfolio, with a combination of Arab and Art Deco influences. In addition to the stunning beach-front setting, Al Bustan also offers a 1km-long private beach and five outdoor swimming pools. The Six Senses Spa, built in the traditional Omani style, provides guests with a variety of indulgent treatments in addition to a yoga studio.

Al Bustan is located on the sunny southeast coast of Oman and makes an ideal base from which to explore the country. Still relatively overlooked by travellers, Oman is a stable and welcoming country, with neither the turmoil of some of its neighbours nor the wealth of the Emirates. It retains a simple, hospitable Bedouin charm, from the colourful port of Muscat to its windblown deserts.
