The Caribbean island of Puerto Rico is the perfect tropical getaway for sun-seeking travellers. The St Regis Bahia Beach Resort

Dorado Beach, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve

This luxury oceanfront retreat has hosted famous guests including Liz Taylor and John F Kennedy, and it was previously owned by Laurance Rockefeller. Located 35 minutes from the capital San Juan, the hotel has 100 guest rooms and suites, all with private plunge pools. Condado Vanderbilt Hotel

Established in 1919, this luxury beachfront hotel has had a recent refurb that has cost $200 million. There’s a rooftop infinity pool, fine dining restaurants, a spa with the island’s only marble hammam, and lavish guest rooms and suites with flat-screen Apple TVs, and guests are treated to personalised service from butlers and staff.

Hix Island House

Located on the island of Vieques, this eco-friendly boutique hotel is perched on a hill offering views overlooking the beautiful bay. With just 19 loft-style three-walled rooms that boast outdoor showers and private patio areas, this chic hotel is perfect for intimate getaways with loved ones. There’s the unique Casa Solaris solar-powered guest house for larger groups, and facilities including a pool with bay views, a yoga studio, and a lobby honour bar.

Hotel El Convento

This converted convent in Old San Juan has 58 colonial-style guest rooms that ooze history and charm and feature Louver door and Juliet balconies or private terraces. There’s an outdoor pool, a jacuzzi, a fitness centre, two restaurants, and guests will have access to the exclusive El Convento Beach Club.

Hotel O:live

Located in Condado, the family-run Hotel O:live has 15 stylish suites with luxury amenities including rainfall showers with massage jets, free wireless internet and private terrace or verandas. The rooftop bar is fantastic for cocktails and sunset views, while the chef at Sage Steak Loft restaurant adds a twist of papaya and mango to delicious meat cuts.
