Plaza Grande Hotel in Ecuador named as South America's Leading Boutique Hotel
Ecuador triumphed at the recent World Travel Awards, winning seven awards across several categories. One of these winners was the Plaza Grande Hotel, Quito, named as the Leading Boutique Hotel in South America. With its palatial architecture, decorated façade, and luxury accommodation and facilities, it's no wonder why this centrally-located all-suite hotel received this prestigious accolade.
The World Travel Awards South America Gala Ceremony recently took place in Peru, honouring the best of the travel and hospitality industry. Among the winners, was Ecuador with 31 nominations and seven awards that recognised its hotels and the country’s position as a leading green destination.
One of the successful winners was The Plaza Grande Hotel in Quito, located in the centre of the city and one of the oldest buildings, dating back to the 16th Century. Named as the Leading Boutique Hotel in South America, this palatial building is a popular hotel due to its central position on Independence Square, its history, and its lavish accommodation.
The hotel is located in the former Hotel Majestic and has 15 suites –Plaza View, Royal, and Presidential – that feature lavish decoration, large beds with Egyptian cotton sheets, and amenities including free wireless internet with individual routers, 42-inch flat-screen TVs, air conditioning, small fridges, and luxury bathroom products. Some suites have balconies with views of the square and the cathedral, and many have jacuzzis. Guests can enjoy nice personal touches in the suites, including scattered rose petals in bathroom sinks, plush bathrobes and slippers, a quill pen and upscale stationary in a wooden box, a personal note from the manager, and a small tray of sweet treats upon arrival.
The facilities at The Plaza Grande include three restaurants that serve international and Ecuadorian culinary dishes. La Belle Epoque restaurant is an elegant 1940s-style French restaurant that has live music and an extensive wine list thanks to the hotel’s El Claustro wine bar situated in the basement. There’s a function room at the top of the hotel with a champagne bar and cognac bar and an outdoor terrace where guests can relax and enjoy views of the city. Guests also have access to a small spa and fitness centre during their stay.
The hotel’s location next to the Carondelet Palace and the Archbishop's Palace is ideal for travellers who want to explore the historic Old Town of Quito, a World Heritage Site. Visitors can head to the nearby Metropolitan Cathedral, or browse around the Otavalo or Saquisili markets.
Quito is the capital of Ecuador, and was named as South America’s Leading Destination in the World Travel Awards 2016. The city is located 2,800 metres above sea level in the foot hills of the magnificent Andes Mountains, and it features some of the world’s best-preserved Spanish colonial architecture.
