New resort planned for Antigua's pristine Half Moon Bay

Antigua's Half Moon Bay is set to regain its status as a sought-after holiday hotspot after Replay Resorts announced plans to re-establish and expand the former resort behind the beach.

New resort planned for Antigua's pristine Half Moon Bay

Half Moon Bay in Antigua, which features one of the Caribbean's most renowned beaches, is set to become a premier sun, sea and sand destination once again after Replay Resorts signed a deal to develop 108 acres of land beside the bay, including the site of the former Half Moon Bay Resort.

Canadian destination development company Replay Resorts says it intends to re-establish Half Moon Bay, which boasts a perfect crescent of soft white sand fringed by greenery and lapped by cerulean waves, as one of the most idyllic destinations in the Caribbean.

"Half Moon Bay affords Replay a unique competitive advantage to create what we believe will be one of the finest resorts in the Caribbean."

Explained Replay's managing director Bill Green. Mr Green also commented:

"A new international airport with direct flights from the US and Europe, the bay itself, the land and landscape combined with the ease of access to Nelson's Dockyard, English Harbour and St. John's make Half Moon Bay an ideal location for the international traveller."

The original Half Moon Bay Resort opened in the 1950s and was a favourite destination of jetsetters and celebrities for decades before its closure after a hurricane in 1995. The low-rise buildings, which still stand behind the bay half-hidden by trees and foliage, will be levelled and a new resort built in its place.

The major development plans for Half Moon Bay include a luxury beachfront hotel plus a selection of waterside and sea-view villas and cottages constructed alongside a new retail village. The new resort will blend into the natural landscape, preserving its natural beauty and aiming to be sustainable and environmentally sound by minimizing its energy, water use and waste footprint.

The resort will feature swimming pools, edible gardens, a luxury spa and a fitness centre, as well as a full range of dining options including restaurants, informal eateries and bars. Space and capacity to host international events, shows and conferences is also being factored into Replay's plans for the site. The resort will offer experiences that appeal to active travellers such as hiking and bicycle trails, beach and aquatic activities and interactive guided tours.

Commenting on the plans to revive Half Moon Bay, Antigua's prime minister Gaston Browne said:

"We have met with developers from around the world who have shown great interest in redeveloping Half Moon Bay, but Replay Resorts stood out for its expertise in resort place-making and as importantly, its ability to put these places on the world map.

"These are integral elements to realizing the potential of Half Moon Bay. Replay's vision for Half Moon Bay will generate significant employment and economic benefits for the people of Antigua for years to come."

Replay Resort's CEO, Michael Coyle, expressed the company's intention to work closely with the island to help guests get the most out of a holiday in Antigua. Mr Coyle said:

"Our vision for Half Moon Bay is to create a destination resort with experiences and adventures that create indelible memories for our guests. We will work in partnership and collaboration with the people of Antigua to provide these experiences. We like to say that we help our guests see the ways of the place through the eyes of a local."
