TripAdvisor has named Punta Cana as the No.1 Destination in the Caribbean in the 2016 Traveller’s Choice Awards.

Members of the leading travel site reviewed and ranked the eastern coastal region in the Dominican Republic over the past 12 months, and Punta Cana was awarded for being a safe and enjoyable holiday destination in the Caribbean.

Commenting to Yahoo Finance News; Magaly Toribio, the Marketing Advisor for the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism, explained their delight with this award saying:

"We are thrilled to receive this recognition and hear that the efforts we have put into the Punta Cana region are so highly rated by tourists.

"We have worked to make Punta Cana an accessible destination attractive to a wide variety of travellers and are glad to know that its offerings are so deeply enjoyed by those that visit."

Punta Cana is situated on the east coast of the Dominican Republic and the region is renowned for its world-class golf resorts and designer championship golf courses. The surrounding turquoise ocean provides plenty of opportunities for scuba diving, snorkelling, swimming, windsurfing, sailing, and deep-sea fishing adventures, while the Bávaro area is home to the award-winning Bávaro Beach and an array of luxury hotels, casinos, boutique shops, gourmet restaurants, and chic bars.

Punta Cana’s long coastline is home to palm-fringed sandy beach such as the quiet stretches on Boca de Yuma’s, or Bávaro Beach with its calm turquoise lagoon which is protected by a barrier reef and perfect for fun family activities.

Most of the area’s hotels and resorts are located within a 20-minute drive from the Punta Cana International Airport, and there are flights connecting 26 countries. Travellers will have easy highway access to other destinations in the Dominican Republic such as Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata, Samaná and La Romana.

Nature-lovers can visit Mano Juan village on Saona Island and learn about turtle conservation projects, while Dolphin Island Park is place to get close to dolphins and sea lions within their natural habitat.

Thrill-seekers can enjoy zip-lining high above verdant jungles, dune buggy rides along Bávaro, or scuba diving off the coast of Cabeza de Toro.
