Dominican Republic named Best Golf Destination in the Caribbean 2014 in World Golf Awards

The Dominican Republic has been named the Best Golf Destination in the Caribbean 2014 during the World Golf Awards. The nation has 26 award-winning golf courses, many of which show off its breathtaking natural scenery and have been designed by renowned Pete Dye, P.B. Dye, Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Greg Norman.

The World Golf Awards have named the announced the Best Golf Destination in the Caribbean 2014.

The honour went to the Dominican Republic with its selection of 26 award-winning golf courses that have been designed by renowned golfing legends including Pete Dye, P.B. Dye, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio, Nick Faldo, Nick Price, and Greg Norman.

Magaly Toribio, the Marketing Advisor for the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism, commented:

"We could not be happier to be recognised for our destination and excellent tourism product by such a prestigious award in this sector. We are confident that our successes will continue to grow as both amateur and professional players are drawn to our picturesque designer courses and world-class accommodations."

The nation has updated its courses and club options and this autumn, the first DR Golf Travel Exchange took place and featured workshops, course tours and seminars.

The first World Golf Awards are part of the renowned World Travel Awards that have recognised as the “Oscars of the travel industry” for the past 20 years. Winners of the WGA are based on votes from golf travel and tourism professionals.

Punta Cana, Puerto Plata and the country’s capital city, Santo Domingo, are home to some of the world’s best golf courses and offer stunning ocean and beach views while golfers enjoy a few rounds of the game.

The country’s excellent air and land connections, luxury beachfront hotels, championship golf courses, and the tropical climate enables the Dominican Republic to be an excellent golf destination in the Caribbean.

In 2013, 103,000 travellers visited the country for golf holidays and by the end of this year, 125,000 golfers are expected to have visited.

The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern two thirds of the island of Hispaniola, shared the island with the country, Haiti. It is the second largest Caribbean nation and boasts beautiful landscapes including pristine white sand palm infringed beaches, sparkling azure ocean waters that perfect for scuba diving and snorkelling, rolling green hills. Tourists can enjoy an array of activities including water sports, treks through lush tropical rainforests, and excursions to historical sites and towns.
