Antigua and Barbuda record rise in UK holidaymakers

Antigua and Barbuda, a twin island nation in the Caribbean has recorded a significant rise in UK tourists. The number of visitors from the UK arriving to Antigua and Barbuda has risen 22 per cent since this time last year.

The country's tourism industry is changing and after the announcement of a new Tourism Minister following the recent elections, and a brand new terminal at the V.C. Bird International Airport (ANU) that is scheduled to be completed in November, the islands are set to receive even more tourists in the near future.

Earlier this month, Gaston Browne of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party, was sworn in as the new Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda and he announced that Anthony Michael would be the new minister responsible for tourism, economic development, investment and energy. Robin Yearwood is the new minister of public utilities, civil aviation and transportation.

The Caribbean island's new airport terminal will treble the number of departure gates, adding new shops, restaurants and lounges for holidaymakers. Cherrie Osborne, the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority Director for UK and Europe, commented:

"The announcement of new ministers for tourism and civil aviation took place just after Antigua and Barbuda's inaugural Travel Trade Showcase on the island and both will bring new initiatives into this sector. The completion of the new airport terminal this November will further add to our product offering and enhance the visitor experience for many so that we continue to welcome even higher numbers of visitors to the destination."

The nation of Antigua and Barbuda lies between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean and is famous for its wide selection of beautiful pristine white sand beaches.

Barbuda is the smaller of the two islands, located north of Antigua and is a popular spot for bird watching at the Frigate Bird Sanctuary in the Codrington Lagoon. The island is less built-up and has a selection of luxury beachfront hotels and resorts.

Antigua is the largest of the twin-island nation and it is a hotspot for destination for weddings, honeymoons and family holidays thanks to its natural scenery which is typical of the Caribbean: white sand palm-fringed beaches, warm turquoise ocean waters, and verdant forests and landscapes.
