Sonesta Hotels and Resorts will be expanding its Caribbean collection this summer after taking over two hotels in Curacao. The Colombia-based GHL Hoteles took over The Kura Hulanda Hotel and Spa and the Kura Hulanda Lodge and Beach Club in Curacao last December and the hotel group plans to relaunch them under the Sonesta brand this summer.
Both properties will become all inclusive resorts following renovations and upgrades to meet the standards of Sonesta Hotels and Resorts.
The Kura Hulanda Hotel and Spa is an 82-room luxury boutique resort in Willemstad and the Kura Hulanda Lodge and Beach Club is located on the west coast of the island of Curacao and has 70 guest rooms and a spectacular natural coral reef located off of its white sand beach.
Curacao is the largest of the five islands that are located in the Netherlands Antilles in the South Caribbean Sea. The island is located off the coast of Venezuela and is famous for being one of the best scuba diving destinations in the Caribbean thanks to its calm turquoise warm ocean waters and colourful coral reefs that fringe the island's white sand beaches.
The island is rich in history and its capital Willemstad is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, while towards the west of the city, there are the remains of Piscadera Bay Fort, an eighteenth-century fortification that was used to protect the island from attacks from invading forces over the centuries.
The charming pastel-coloured buildings show off the Dutch Colonial architecture and the stunning Hato Caves are home to impressive stalactites and stalagmites, and drawings that date back at least 1,500 years.
Nature-loving holidaymakers can hike around the huge Christoffel National Park where they can catch sightings of the diverse wildlife species, and scuba divers and snorkelers will have access to 60 diving sites in crystal clear waters where they can swim alongside marine creatures such as angelfish, parrotfish, trumpet fish, sea turtles, sting rays, lobsters, green moray eels, and lobsters.
GHL Hoteles also operates two other Sonesta-branded resorts in St Maarten in Great Bay and Maho Beach.
