Construction to start soon on second cruise pier at Port Zante in St Kitts
Construction on a second cruise pier in St Kitts and Nevis will commence soon following the signing of a memorandum of understanding in October last year between the St Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority and Jay Cashman, Inc. The pier will be built in Port Zante and it will be able to accommodate two Oasis class cruise ships at the same time.
The twin-island nation of St Kitts and Nevis will soon see the construction of a second pier at Port Zante.
In October last year, a memorandum of understanding was signed by the St Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority in St Kitts and Jay Cashman, Inc for the development of the new pier in St Kitts and Nevis.
The $31 million cruise pier will be able to accommodate two Oasis class cruise ships at the same time which will transport even more tourists to the twin-island nation where they can enjoy the tropical paradise that is St Kitts and Nevis.
"The cruise sector of the tourism industry has been going through tremendous growth over the last six years."
Explained the Minister of Tourism, Richard Skerritt.
The sector saw an increase from fewer than 200,000 to more than 700,000 cruise passengers within those years and Skerritt added that the second pier is being built due to popularity and demand. Mr Skerritt added:
"Demand for our destination is growing within the cruise industry and if demand is growing then you have to prepare for the present and future growth of that demand. ...the demand is now going beyond one cruise pier because we are having, in excess of thirty days in one season where we have three or four ships and in two cases five ships seeking to come into our port."
Cruise Port Development Ltd, an American-based company in Massachusetts, owned by J. Cashman and Associates is responsible for raising the financing required for the construction of the St Kitts pier and upland works. A 30-year lease will be granted to Cruise Port Development Ltd by St. Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority (SCASPA) for the construction of the new pier.
The Oasis class sized vessels are the world's largest passenger ships and perfect for providing luxurious holidays cruising around St Kitts and Nevis and the rest of the Caribbean. Construction of the new pier is expected to be completed by November, 2014 in time for the 2014/2015 Caribbean cruise season.
St Kitts and Nevis is a favourite destination for yacht and cruise holidays in the Caribbean and the islands receive visitors all year round thanks to their tropical climate and beautiful natural landscapes including, white sand beaches fringed with crystal-clear azure ocean waters, verdant forests, majestic volcanic peaks, and winding rivers.
