Holidaymakers will now have another transport option when they travel between the United States and the Caribbean island nation of the Bahamas.

A new passenger ferry service will be launched this week which will transport tourists visiting Bahamas from Miami in the United States to the island of Bimini.

According to David Johnson, the Director General at the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, the new service is expected to open up new tourism markets as well as bring new visitors to the island's new boutique casino.

The first Superfast Ferries service will launch on Friday 5th July and will depart from the Port of Miami with two trips planned daily.

The 358-passenger vessel owned by Spanish-based Balearia already provides a service for holidaymakers to the Bahamas but the Superfast Ferries service will be able to carry up to 1,600 passengers.

"I think that there are going to be opportunities here for many entrepreneurs if we're attracting the number of persons they are offering," explained David Johnson.

"Just the sheer volume of additional visitors coming to Bimini should create some other opportunities in the tourism sector."

Tourism officials predict that the new ferry service could bring up to 400,000 visitors a year which will help local business and the economy.

One of Bimini's main attractions is the Resorts World Bimini Bay Casino, which opened earlier this week, has created 1,300 jobs and is expected to be hotspot for the Bahamas.

The Bahamas boasts a collection of idyllic islands, including Bimini, Berry Islands, Crooked Island Mayaguana, Acklins, The Berry Islands, Nassau, The Exumas, Grand Bahama Island, and Harbour Island. The main island of Grand Bahama boasts beautiful pink sand beaches created from fractured seashell mixed with sand; an underwater limestone cave system; lush botanical gardens, stunning nature reserves; and an array of beachfront Bahamas hotels and resorts.
