Tourism in Abu Dhabi is continuing to rise after data released by the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority revealed that the number of guests staying in hotels and apartments in May increased by 12 per cent compared to the same month in 2011.

The total number of visitors who stayed in the emirate’s hotels during Abu Dhabi holidays and business trips in May 2012 was recorded at 192,374 and the total number of guest nights reached 542,567 which was a seven per cent increase compared to May last year.

Revenue generated from Abu Dhabi hotels increased by three percent to AED360 million ($98 million) and the average guests stays for 2.82 days.

Mubarak Al Muhairi, the Director General of Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority, explained: “Average length of stay is a key performance indicator we are now actively addressing through our intensive summer in Abu Dhabi campaign. By offering a range of discounted activities and family-orientated entertainment programmes, we are providing more incentives to guests to visit the emirate and stay for longer.”

Mr Al Muhairi added that the new figures indicate that the emirate is on track to receive 2.3 million guests who will stay in hotels and apartments in Abu Dhabi by the end of 2012.

The tourism authority has recently opened new offices in New York and Jeddah to encourage more international holidaymakers to book longer holidays in Abu Dhabi.

“In both countries we are now engaging with the outbound travel trade to produce significant packaging around stays of five nights and more,” he said.

The number of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) tourists going on holidays to Abu Dhabi in May 2012 increased by 20 per cent compared to the same month last year and European visitors increased by 15 per cent.

Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates and the modern city is home to a variety of attractions for visitors taking business trips or an Abu Dhabi holiday. These include the stunning Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Khalifa Park, the beautiful waterfront, the Marina Mall, the Abu Dhabi Mall, and Yas Island which is home to Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi, Yas Marina, Yas Marina Circuit, and Ferrari World.
