7.2% increase in the number of people taking holidays to Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands’ Tourism Ministry has started 2012 on high note. Primier McKeeva Bush recently announced a 7.2 per cent growth in the number of people who had booked overnight holidays in the Cayman Islands in 2011 when compared to figures in 2010. The 309,091 overnight visitors to the Cayman Islands last year made for the highest number of holidaymakers to the island chain in ten years.

Bush was keen to put the achievement into perspective given the impact of the global economic crisis on tourism in many other popular holiday destinations. “[Overnight] tourism arrivals have been positive for 26 months out of the last 28…So out of the last two years and four months we have been positive for two years and two months, when other destinations have had negative arrival figures” Bush noted.

Acting Director of Tourism, Shomari Scott, noted that the success of the Cayman Islands was not only limited to the number of overnight arrivals in 2011. The British Overseas Territory's tourism industry has also enjoyed a boost from high profile international media as the Cayman Islands has earned itself widespread international recognition as one of the top Caribbean destinations in 2012. Leading U.S. media, the New York Times and Fox News have both endorsed holidays to Cayman Islands. The New York Times cited the family-friendly activities unique to the Cayman Islands like StingrayCity and the Cayman Turtle Farm, both of which are popular with kids and adults alike.

It is all about customer service and giving our visitors a great time.”
