During the celebrations of World Tourism Day on 27th September 2010, Antigua and Barbuda had a host of eco-friendly initiatives under this year's theme of "Tourism and Biodiversity", aimed at preserving Antigua's ecosystem.

Antigua holidays were celebrated on a high note during World Tourism Day and with a special emphasis on the topic of "Tourism and Biodiversity". John Maginley, Antigua and Barbuda Minister of Tourism officially declared that on the occasion of World Tourism Day 2010, this year the Island celebrated the Anniversary under the theme "Tourism and Biodiversity".

Maginley added the theme it provides a unique opportunity to raise public awareness of the importance of biodiversity to tourism and the role of sustainable tourism in the conservation and preservation of our fragile eco-system.

"As the leading growth sector and economic activity in Antigua and Barbuda, sustainable tourism has an important role and responsibility in managing and conserving our biological and natural resources and at the same time, generates significant revenues for conservation and community development", he said.

As part of this year's theme, the Ministry of Tourism in partnership with the Antigua Hotels and Tourism Association (AHTA), and the Environmental Division hosted two community initiatives to promote a future of eco-friendly Antigua holidays.

On Saturday, September 25, the Ministry of Tourism along with tourism stakeholders, civic organisations and private citizens conducted a beach cleanup exercise. Later on they conducted a tree planting project at the Body Pond Area. Both of these initiatives were designed to raise public awareness of the mutual interdependency of biodiversity and tourism and to demonstrate how tourism can contribute to preserving life on Earth and its unique biodiversity while helping prolong the life of holidays in Antigua and Barbuda by looking after the island's ecosystem.

The topic of "Tourism and Biodiversity" is of great importance to all countries that consider themselves important Caribbean holiday destinations, as their tourism appeal relies mainly on the Caribbean islands' pristine eco-conditions and beautiful nature. Most of those who go on Caribbean holidays go for the calming and soothing nature elements to be found there, with no disruption from the outside world's pollution and noise.
