Oman aims to attract 12 million holidaymakers annually by 2020

Oman Tourism Authority has set a target of 12 million tourists taking Oman holidays each year by 2020 with hopes to develop a sustainable tourism sector and create thousands of jobs.

Last year, an estimated 2.5 million visitors took holidays in Oman and the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) released a report in July this year which identified Oman as one of the fastest movers up the global tourism ladder.

The increase in visitor numbers in Oman will inevitably lead to an increase in employment opportunities and reports predict that the tourism sector will employ 134,000 people, 9 percent of the country's workforce, by 2020, which is a 7.8 percent increase on the current 87,000.

It is not just an increase in Oman hotels, resorts and attractions but also a movement across the GCC region. Many areas across the Middle East and North Africa are predicting an increase in foreign visitor arrivals and 450 projects are currently under development across this region bringing 126,000 new rooms, and 25 percent of this underway in Dubai.

Oman hotels are currently developing and planning 4000 new rooms over the next few years but the government are planning on promoting the country, not just hotels, as a whole tourist destination.

With majestic mountain ranges, pristine beaches, colourful coral reefs for diving, the government will be implementing a five-year plan which will come into force in January 2011, which will be used to promote Oman holidays as an option for mountain climbing, scuba diving, yachting as well promoting the region as a family-friendly destination.

The Sultanate of Oman is situated in southern Asia on the southeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula. Oman comprises the Al Hajar Mountains in the north, desert landscapes, 1700km of coastline and coral reefs, sandy beaches, and the vibrant city capital of Muscat.
