Kenya Tourism Federation Becomes First Kenyan Private Sector Member to be Affiliated to UNWTO

The Kenya Tourism Federation has become the first private sector tourism agency to become an affiliate member of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation and will now be able to access information from the UNWTO in order to help promote Kenya holidays and tourism in the region.

The UNWTO is an agency of the United Nations which specialises in handling tourism policy issues and developing sectors on a global level. The new membership was approved by the UNWTO Executive Council in Puerto Iguazu in Argentina and allows the Kenya Tourism Federation, which is the umbrellas body of tourism boards and organisations, to explore partnerships for new business opportunities for Kenya hotels and businesses offering Kenya holidays.

The First Vice Chairman of the UNWTO Executive Council, Tourism Minister Najib Balala, welcomed the Kenya Tourism Federation (KTF) and said:

"The private sector in Kenya is the prime mover of our tourism industry and having a voice in the world tourism body will enable it to enjoy international recognition and exposure through UNWTO networks and interaction with leading international business decision makers."

The KTF is the first private sector organisation to join the global tourism organisation and current members promoting Kenya holidays and the region's travel industry in the public sector who belong to UNWTO include Kenyatta International Conference Centre, Kenya Tourism Board, Kenya Utalii College and Catering, and Tourism Development Levy Trustees.

The UNWTO Council meet twice a year and is currently made up o 31 members who are elected by the General Assembly. To date, the only sessions held in Africa have been in the north and western regions of the African countries and southern and eastern countries have yet to host the all important meetings. However, Kenya may now change this as they submitted their bid to host the 90th Session of the UNWTO Executive Council meeting in 2011.
