A number of international celebrities and sports stars might be working alongside the Barbados Tourism Authority in an attempt to attract more travellers to take Barbados holidays this year and help boost the region's tourism and travel sector.

Barbados Tourism Authority in talks with Popstars and Sports Stars

International popstar and Barbados born, Rihanna, and the legendary soul singer Hal Linton are said to be talking to the Minister of Tourism, Richard Sealy, about potential performances in Barbados this year. The number of visitors taking flights to Barbados declined by 8.7 per cent during 2009 and the number of tourists taking Barbados holidays during the year fell in total by eight per cent.

Now the Barbados government and Barbados Tourism Authority are implementing a wide-range marketing and promotion programme in a bid to reverse the losses from 2009 and encourage more travellers to take Barbados holidays.

Officials from the tourism industry in Barbados said that tourist spending, including stays in Barbados hotels, was down by a staggering $100 million last year compared to 2008 and the number of long-stay visitors to the region fell by nearly 40,000.
The new marketing programme has been put in place to improve old markets and target tourists from all over the world to take holidays in Barbados with the help of new sports, culture and music events taking place on the stunning island.

After a visit from tennis star Serena Williams in 2009, this year could see an appearance from sister, Venus Williams, and other tennis aces at the Tennis Pon De Rock.

With the International Cricket Council's Twenty20 cricket series in May, the world's female boxing championships in September and a number of other music and culture events taking place in 2010, Barbados looks set for a busy year and will provide visitors on Barbados holidays with superstar entertainment as well as stunning scenery, warm temperatures and friendly welcoming locals.
