Splendid Cuba holidays with Restoration of Havana heritage
Adding to the iconic old age glamour that characterises Cuba holidays in Havana, the City’s Historian Office has just announced that over a hundred restoration works have been successfully carried out in the capital to mark the city’s 490th anniversary this year.
More than 100 building projects and restoration touches have taken place, including the old and legendary San Jose Warehouse on Port Avenue, which was built on Havana Bay’s seashore back in 1885. Conceived as a five-block large cultural and commercial complex, this is the only surviving building of its kind in the area and work has been done in order to create a new place for the promotion and enjoyment of the genuine values of the Cuban culture. The San Jose centre has now been fully restored to offer tourists on Cuba holidays with a new attraction to check out during Havana sightseeing trips. For example, the warehouse is already home to the traditional Artisan Market of the Cathedral Square, which found its new venue here after the restoration works. From here Cubans and those on Cuba holidays can enjoy panoramic vies of the Havana Bay, be caressed by the refreshing sea breezes and engage in cultural activities that enhance the cultural experience of Old Havana.
Another restored building of social and popular value is the Wedding Palace, which was a former Spanish Casino, later converted into a wedding venue. Located on the city’s main Prado Avenue, the palace will boast a new concert room now. Working as a big concert hall now, there is good news for those looking for Cuba weddings in a central Havana location as its wedding facilities have also been given a makeover.
As many as eight historic locomotives, including an ancient steam locomotive were also recovered from old sugar refineries and plantations, which will also be part of the Railroad Museum located near the Havana Train Station.
Other restoration works completed include the Green Tile House on 5th Avenue, as well as a multifamily building right at the heart of Old Havana’s historical centre together with another 11 buildings on Barcelona Street in the Centro Habana municipality.
Furthermore, the City’s Historian Office, announced that more restoration plans are still in their recovery phase. This office, in charge of the Cuban capital’s restoration, was founded in 1983 after the area of Old Havana, including its fortification system, was declared a World Heritage Site in 1982 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.
"Currently, there are 102 restoration works underway: houses, an Alzheimer treatment facility, hotels, cultural centres, homes for the elderly, and more. In restoring the city, we need to place social needs first, so if we have to turn a palace into an elderly people nursery or child care centre, so be it." – were the words of the City’s Historian, Eusebio Leal.
But expanding the many touristic options to other parts of Havana outside Old Havana, Leal also added that further works are being carried out to enhance many other Havana areas and municipalites for the benefit of both citizens and holidaymakers on Cuba holidays.
"My concern is not only the colonial city; I’m also interested in the republican, the modern, the contemporary city. There are many examples of our interventions in that direction. For instance, the work done to restore the art school at Cubanacan, perhaps the most well-known piece of architecture of the revolutionary period worldwide, a school that is a symbol of the utopian ideal of the Revolution: achieving utmost justice.
"We could also mention the house of the green tile roof in Miramar, and many other republican and modern buildings in Old Havana, like the Cueto palace, the Bacardi building, or the Lonja del Comercio, which will be one hundred years in 2009." he concluded.
