Overview

This African odyssey covers the highlights of the eastern and southern regions of this colourful continent. In Kenya, travel from Samburu National Park through the beauty of the Great Rift Valley to the world-famous Masai Mara. Cross into Tanzania to see the vibrant Serengeti plains and Ngorongoro Crater. Fly to the 'mother city' of South Africa, Cape Town, to embark on one of the world's most scenic drives along the Garden Route. The final part of this adventure takes you to the magnificent Victoria Falls in Zambia and on to Chobe National Park in Botswana. The Trans-Africa tour truly is the holiday of a lifetime.

Day 1 Monday - Fly to Nairobi

Fly from Heathrow overnight to Nairobi.

Day 2 Tuesday - Nairobi

On arrival transfer to your hotel for a day at leisure or choose from a selection of optional excursions (book and pay locally).

Day 3 Wednesday - Samburu

Drive 360 km north to Samburu National Reserve. After lunch enjoy your first game drive through the park's open savannah. The park is home to a host of animals including several species which are rarely seen in numbers elsewhere isuch as Grevy's zebras, reticulated giraffes and long-necked gerenuks. The Uaaso Nyiro River which traverses the park is populated by hippos and crocodiles. (b,l,d)

Morning and afternoon game drives in this beautiful area of Kenya. (b,l,d)

Day 5 Friday - Aberdare National Park

Drive 220 km to the Aberdare National Park. After lunch at the Outspan Hotel, transfer to Treetops. This lodge is set on stilts overlooking a water hole which attracts an abundance of wildlife including elephants. The lodge has 4 decks and a rooftop-viewing platform so you can get great views of the animals. Bathroom facilities at Treetops are shared. Guests can only take an overnight bag to the lodge, other luggage will be left in a secure luggage storage facility. (b,l,d)

Day 6 Saturday - Lake Naivasha

After breakfast, drive to 240 km to Lake Naivasha picking up your luggage en route. You have an afternoon at leisure to enjoy the surroundings of this beautiful area. The lake is home to an abundance of birdlife and excursions can be arranged to explore the area (book and pay locally). (b,l,d)

Day 7 Sunday - Masai Mara

Drive 270 km through the Great Rift Valley to the world famous Masai Mara Game Reserve. After checking into the lodge take a late afternoon game drive in this spectacular wildlife area. (b,l,d)

Day 8 Monday - Masai Mara-Nairobi

Enjoy an early morning game drive and lunch at the lodge before transferring to the airstrip. Take a light aircraft flight to Nairobi (see note) and transfer to your hotel. (b,l)

Day 9 Tuesday - Tarangire

Fly to Kilimanjaro Airport then drive 160 km to Tarangire National Park, arriving in time for lunch. This national park covers 2600 sq km of grassland and floodplains, and features a large proportion of tall acacia woodland. Enjoy an afternoon game drive through this vast landscape before returning to the lodge for dinner. (b,l,d)

Day 10 Wednesday - Serengeti

Drive 350 km to the world-famous Serengeti National Park. This wilderness area is home to one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in the world including Africa’s ‘Big 5’ – elephant, rhino, lion, leopard and buffalo. Enjoy an afternoon game drive through this incredible area. (b,l,d)

Day 11 Thursday - Serengeti

Enjoy an optional early morning balloon flight* followed by a 'bubbly' bush breakfast (optional extra), or an early morning game drive followed by breakfast at the lodge. There is free time to relax at the lodge until your late afternoon game drive. (b,l,d)

Day 12 Friday - Ngorongoro

Take an early morning game drive in the Serengeti. Visit Olduvai Gorge, an area commonly referred to as "The Cradle of Mankind", en route to the Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge, about 200 km. This lodge is perched on the jagged rim of the Ngorongoro Crater and offers spectacular views of the crater; it is the perfect spot to watch a majestic African sunset. (b,l,d)

Day 13 Saturday - Ngorongoro Crater

Drive down into the crater for a half-day of game viewing. The crater floor is a natural sanctuary for thousands of animals; its magical setting and abundant wildlife never fail to enthral visitors. In the afternoon visit a local Masai Village where you can learn about the Masai culture and buy a variety of traditional handicrafts. (b,l,d)

Day 14 Sunday - Nairobi

Return 200 km to Arusha and fly to Nairobi. Transfer to your hotel. (b)

Day 15 Monday - Cape Town

Fly via Johannesburg to Cape Town. Meet your guide and transfer to the Protea Hotel Sea Point (25 km). Take the remainder of the day to relax. (b)

Day 16 Tuesday - Cape Town

Enjoy a day at leisure to explore the city or make use of the facilities at the Protea Hotel Sea Point. The hotel is situated just 100m from the Atlantic Ocean and the Sea Point Promenade and just ten minutes drive from the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. (b)

Day 17 Wednesday - Cape Town - Oudtshoorn

Travel via the town of Montagu on 'Route 62' to the village of Barrydale where you stop for tea. Continue on to Oudtshoorn which is known as the 'feather capital of the world' thanks to its huge ostrich industry (450 km). After a tour of an ostrich farm, go underground in the spectacular Cango Caves. (b,d)

Day 18 Thursday - Oudtshoorn - Knysa

Drive via the spectacular Outeniqua Pass to the town of George, and continue to Knysna. Drive to the popular seaside resort of Plettenberg Bay in time for lunch then visit the 'Garden of Eden' forest, and enjoy a leisurely walk before returning to Knysna (190 km). (b)

Day 19 Friday - Knysa

Spend the morning cruising on the vast Knysna Lagoon and visit the Featherbed Nature Reserve. After lunch spend the rest of the day at leisure. (b,l)

Day 20 Saturday - Knysa - Port Elizabeth - Johannesburg

You will depart early this morning and head directly to Port Elizabeth with the scenic Drakensberg Mountain Range always in sight. You will arrive into Port Elizabeth in the mid afternoon where you board your flight to Johannesburg. On arrival in Johannesburg you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Sandton (290 km). Day 21 Sunday - Johannesburg - Livingstone

Transfer to the airport for the flight to Livingstone in Zambia. Transfer to the Zambezi Sun Hotel situated within walking distance of Victoria Falls (45 km). (b)

Day 22 Monday - Livingstone

Spend the day exploring Victoria Falls at your leisure (hotel guests have unlimited access). You can relax and enjoy the hotel facilities or take an optional tour into town or to a local village (book and pay locally). (b)

Day 23 Tuesday - Livingstone - Chobe

Depart from Victoria Falls and cross the border into Botswana then continue on to your lodge (90 km). Once settled in, check with the safari desk and confirm your optional game viewing activities. You can choose to take a late afternoon cruise on the river or a tour into the Chobe National Park by power boat, where you can get up close to the abundant wildlife. Another option is to take a game drive in open 4x4 vehicles into the national park, which is renowned for its large herds of elephants. (b,l,d)

Day 25 Thursday - Chobe - Johannesburg - London

This morning there is time for one final game viewing activity and breakfast before you drive 90 km back across the border to Livingstone Airport for your flight to Johannesburg and onward to Heathrow. (b)
