Where to go in Colombia

Being such a varied country, Colombia offers an excellent variety of places to stay and explore. The nation is particularly well known for its landscapes, which include pristine coastline, jungles and mountains, but equally it possesses a wonderfully rich heritage, both in the form of archaeological sites and colonial towns and cities.

When it comes to the most inspiring Colombia holidays, one of the best destinations to base yourself in is the captivating Caribbean coast. This sun-drenched region is home to some of the most dazzling scenery in the entire country, including a mix of jungle and desert landscapes, not to mention Cartagena - a city that many consider to be Colombia's crowning glory.

And it's not hard to see why. Cartagena is an absolutely beautiful destination drenched in colonial romance. Its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with cobbled alleys and historic churches - a joy to explore on foot. The peninsula of Bocagrande, meanwhile, provides a gorgeous stretch of beach to relax on not far from the hustle and bustle of the city. Cartagena's colonial charms mingled with its coastline make this a favourite destination of first-time visitors to Colombia - and will no doubt be somewhere most will long to come back to.

But this city is by no means all that the Caribbean coast has to offer, even though it may well steal the show. The Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona, for instance, is a combination of rainforest and beach, while destinations like Santa Marta and La Guajira Peninsula provide perfect bases for exploring Colombia's Caribbean coastal charms.

Santa Marta makes a particularly good base for a holiday in Colombia, and has the added bonus of being one of the oldest surviving cities in South America. Like Cartagena, it is a colonial city, and its charms mainly lie in its historic heart.

At La Guajira Peninsula, you'll find something quite different. This is the northernmost part of the country, and it provides some of its most beautiful landscapes, particularly in Upper Guajira, which is home to the likes of Punta Gallinas - a hard-to-beat spot if you're keen to soak up some amazing scenery.

The vibrant capital of Bogota is another amazing place to stay - particularly if you're keen to immerse yourself in the heart of modern Colombia. This is a place where you can experience a lively street art scene, while also soaking up some more traditional attractions, such as its old town, La Candelaria, which is filled with historic churches and excellent bars and restaurants.
