Wildlife Oman - Quriyat and Turtle Beach

Duration: Half Day

wildlife oman - quriyat and turtle beach

A holiday in Oman wouldn’t be complete without seeing one of the country’s most beautiful and fascinating marine species up close – green turtles. This tour will take you along Oman’s stunning coastline, where you will visit sinkholes, lush wadis, ancient fishing villages and pristine white-sand beaches, lined by swaying palm trees. And, of course, the sight of hundreds of turtles nesting on the local shores is a spectacular sight not to be missed.

On the way to Quriyat, your first sight of the day is the beautiful Bimah Sinkhole. This unique limestone crater is a natural geological formation, believed to have been a cavern before the roof collapsed many years ago. The large hole is filled with clear, blue-green sea water and is a popular swimming spot for the locals and tourists. We then travel onwards to the tranquil fishing village of Quriyat, where you can enjoy the cool breeze of the Arabian Gulf as you stroll around the picturesque harbour and watch the fishing boats and dhows bobbing on the waters. These traditional Arabian wooden vessels are a strong reminder of Oman’s ancient times when the town was a significant trading port. Quriyat is still guarded by a watchtower today, which dates back to 1635.

We then travel along the coast to the beautiful Finns beach, or “White Beach”, named so because of its pristine white sands. Enjoy a relaxing swim in the clear turquoise waters before we drive onwards to the stunning Wadi Shab, also known as Wadi Tiwi, situated in the village of Tiwi. This is one of the most beautiful wadis (oasis) in Oman. Enjoy a picnic lunch amidst lush date palms and waterfalls, surrounded by cliffs and mountains, before we visit the mysterious ruins of Bibi Miriam’s Tomb in the nearby village of Qalhat.

You can then sit back and enjoy scenic views of the Gulf of Oman’s coastal road as we drive to the seaside town of Sur. Stroll around the harbour of this ancient fishing village, and watch the local fishermen bring in their daily catches. Sur is renowned for being a major dhow-building town, so we will also visit the Dhow building yard where these traditional Arabian wooden boats are still crafted by hand today.

After checking into the Ras Al Had Hotel and enjoying dinner, you will then be taken to the beautiful Ras Al Had beach to see hundreds of green turtles nesting on the shores. This is an amazing and memorable natural experience not to be missed. It is estimated that over 20,000 turtles swim the Indian Ocean every year before they come ashore to breed on the very same beach where they were born. You will see many generations and several different species of turtles here. Witness the incredible sight of baby turtles hatching and racing towards the sea in order to escape their predators. Unfortunately, many hatchlings don’t make the journey, and others have to be rescued. If you don’t mind waking up at dawn, you can help collect the baby turtles in a basket, ready for their transfer to the nearby turtle reserve. This is an awe-inspiring tour, not to be missed.
