Duration: Half Day

kandalama adventure in nature city - sri lanka's soul

A jewel in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka’s striking natural beauty derives from a combination of endless coastlines, high mountainous peaks, emerald green valleys and lush tropical forests. The diverse topography supports an incredible variety of exotic wildlife species, which is just one of the main attractions for travellers visiting the island. Discover the wonders of nature during your holiday in Sri Lanka as you explore the majestic forest surrounding the Kandalama Tank. Boasting a rich diversity of flora and fauna and magnificent scenery, Kandalama is a paradise for wildlife lovers.

Occupying one of the most beautiful areas in the heart of the Cultural Triangle, Kandalama is highly regarded as one of the best eco tourism destinations on the island. It is also home to the famous Heritance Kandalama, one of the most eco-friendly hotels in the world. The beautiful, 55 acre Kandalama forest is located only a short drive away from two of Sri Lanka’s most prominent UNESCO World Heritage Sites – the 5th century AD Sigiriya Rock Fortress (also known as the eighth wonder of the ancient world) and the 1st century BC Dambulla Rock Temple. It is also renowned for being one of the best bird watching locations in the North Central Province.

Numerous nature trails and huts are situated throughout the forest, enabling you to observe hundreds of endemic and migratory bird species amongst the indigenous trees and tropical flora. For its size, Sri Lanka’s bird life is incredibly rich and over 430 species have been recorded here. Sri Lankan Jungle Fowl, Sri Lanka Spurfowl, Indian Pitta, Babblers, Barbets, Horn-bills, Bulbuls, Parakeets, Egrets, Woodpeckers, Sunbirds, Flower Peckers and Fly Catchers are just some of the species that your local wildlife guide will point out to you.

Walking through the Knuckles Mountain Range offers some of the most rewarding bird sightings in the area, in addition to the beautiful Kandalama Tank (reservoir), situated at the northern end of the mountain range on the edge of the intermediate and dry zones. Here, you can take a boat trip on the lake to enjoy some wonderful bird watching opportunities in beautiful surroundings.

Virgin tropical jungles, dry plains, calm waters, hills and mountainous, rocky countryside are all idyllic settings for a wide variety of activities in Kandalama, including hiking, horse riding, river safaris, canoeing, mountain climbing, cycling and even trekking on elephant back. Whichever way you explore Kandalama forest and the surrounding area, its rich natural and archeological treasures will amaze and delight you.
