It is also renowned for being one of the best bird watching locations in the North Central Province.

Numerous nature trails and huts are situated throughout the forest, enabling you to observe hundreds of endemic and migratory bird species amongst the indigenous trees and tropical flora. For its size, Sri Lanka’s bird life is incredibly rich and over 430 species have been recorded here. Sri Lankan Jungle Fowl, Sri Lanka Spurfowl, Indian Pitta, Babblers, Barbets, Horn-bills, Bulbuls, Parakeets, Egrets, Woodpeckers, Sunbirds, Flower Peckers and Fly Catchers are just some of the species that your local wildlife guide will point out to you.

Walking through the Knuckles Mountain Range offers some of the most rewarding bird sightings in the area, in addition to the beautiful Kandalama Tank (reservoir), situated at the northern end of the mountain range on the edge of the intermediate and dry zones. Here, you can take a boat trip on the lake to enjoy some wonderful bird watching opportunities in beautiful surroundings.

Virgin tropical jungles, dry plains, calm waters, hills and mountainous, rocky countryside are all idyllic settings for a wide variety of activities in Kandalama, including hiking, horse riding, river safaris, canoeing, mountain climbing, cycling and even trekking on elephant back. Sri Lanka celebrates highest ever visitor arrivals in 2016

Tourism in Sri Lanka is booming, after the island nation recorded 2,058,000 tourists in 2016. The numbers were a 14 per cent increase compared to 2015 and the highest ever recorded, according to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority. This year, the country is setting a target of 2.5 million tourists, and anticipates to receive four million visitors by 2020.

Sri Lanka records more than two millions international visitors in 2016

Tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka exceeded the two million target in 2016, according to John Amaratunga, the country’s Tourism Development Minister. The island received more 2.2 million visitors in the last 12 months, and the Minister is expecting more than $3.5 billion in revenues generated by tourism. Arrivals in November, 2015 increased by 16 per cent compared to the same month in 2015.
