Colombo Zoo Tour - Meet Sri Lanka Wild Life

Duration: Half Day

colombo zoo tour - meet sri lanka wild life

Spend a day amongst some of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful creatures during this tour of Colombo Zoo in the suburb of Dehiwala, Colombo. As well as meeting and learning about a huge diversity of endemic and foreign birds, reptiles and animals, you will also get the chance to ride an elephant, watch chimpanzee and sea lions shows, and see and do so much more besides. This memorable trip is an exciting adventure for the whole family.

Founded in the early 20th century, Colombo Zoo (also known as Dehiwala Zoo due to its location) is regarded as one of Asia’s largest and most beautiful zoos. Set in 24 acres of lush vegetation and beautiful landscaped gardens, the zoo hosts a wonderful variety of birds and animals, many of which roam free in their natural habitat.

Over 100 mammals live here, including Sri Lanka Leopards, Fishing Cats, Pygmy Hippopotamus, Sri Lanka Sloth Bears, Mouse Deer, Spider Monkeys, lions and gibbons. If you love bird watching, over 100 different species can be spotted flying free in the grounds and tropical aviary. Look out for Sri Lanka Jungle Fowl, Alexandrine Parakeet, Mute Swans and many, many more.

If you’re feeling brave, why not venture into the Reptilium where you will find over 35 different reptile species such as the Albino Cobra, Green Pit Viper, Estuarine Crocodile and Flapshell Turtle. Or, perhaps you would prefer to relax in the beautiful butterfly garden, which boasts spectacular tropical flora and over 20 different butterfly species.

Last but not least, the aquarium is one of Colombo Zoo’s main attractions. Here you can view an incredible variety of freshwater and marine fish, in addition to vibrant corals and molluscans. Comb Tails, Red-knobbed Star Fish, Emperor Angelfish and seahorses are just some of the highlights.

Colombo Zoo’s star attraction is the daily elephant circus show, which includes dancing and performances from six Indian elephants. Watch them stand up on their hind legs, and skip and dance to the music. Some visitors may not approve of this act, but the show is preceded by a talk on conservation and human-elephant conflict.

There is also a daily chimpanzee and sea lion show, and you can also watch the pelicans being fed down at the lake, which is inhabited by other many aquatic birds such as egrets and cormorants. If this isn’t enough excitement for you, why not round the day of with a pony ride or an unforgettable elephant ride through the grounds.

Colombo Zoo is an excellent resource for wildlife information, so a visit here is a wonderful way to familiarise yourself with Sri Lankan wildlife. Watch, learn and above all have fun. This tour is an exciting addition to your holiday in Sri Lanka.
