Walking in the Seychelles

Duration: Half Day

walking in the seychelles

Walking is one of the best ways to explore the exquisite islands of the Seychelles, where stunning white-sand beaches and crystal clear turquoise waters are set against spectacular granitic landscapes. Travelling by foot will also give you the opportunity to observe some of the rarest wildlife in the world. This guided tour along well-marked nature trails will reveal many natural treasures, on some of the most beautiful islands in the Seychelles, including Mahé, La Digue, Praslin and Silhouette.

Located in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the Seychelles comprise over 100 granitic islands and coral atolls. With almost 50% of this archipelago’s landmass protected, these stunning tropical islands remain sanctuaries to some of the rarest and most exotic plant and animal species in the world, some of which can be found nowhere else on earth. Guided island walks cover a variety of scenic routes, revealing indigenous treasures such as the rare Seychelles Scops Owl, Black Paradise Flycatcher and Fruit Pigeon; the carnivorous Pitcher Plant, the enormous Coco de Mer palms, the unique Jellyfish Tree and many more.

Some of the most popular walks you can enjoy in the Seychelles include the nature trails in the Morne Seychellois National Park on the beautiful granitic island of Mahé, the largest and most populated island of the Seychelles archipelago. A combination of steep hiking trails and gentle footpaths can be explored here, which cater for all abilities. As well as spectacular flora and fauna, you will discover stunning landscapes comprising rainforests, mountains and hills, and the highest peak in Seychelles − the Morne Seychelles.

One of the most exciting walks on Praslin Island, the second largest island in the Seychelles, will lead you through the beautiful Vallée de Mai, an UNESCO World Heritage Site. This extraordinary palm forest is believed by some to be the original earthly paradise, the Garden of Eden. The indigenous Coco de Mer palms produce the largest nuts in the world, which are shaped like a female’s pelvis and thus linked with Eve. Fascinating endemic wildlife and rare birds such as the Black Paradise Flycatcher and Fruit Pigeon can also be found here.

The tranquil island of La Digue offers numerous walking opportunities in spectacular settings. Because cars are restricted here, the locals travel by foot, bike and oxcarts. Time seems to have stood still on this charming island, which is renowned for its friendly people and natural beauty. Considered as one of the most unspoiled and traditional islands of the Seychelles chain, La Digue is a delight to explore. The long, beautiful white-sand beaches, with their stunning pink granite rock formations and coral reefs, are ideal for long walks. La Digue is particularly famous for its breathtaking paradise beach Anse Source d'Argent and its soaring granite boulder, which is now a national monument.

Silhouette is the third largest island in the Seychelles chain. Covered by dense vegetation and virgin forest, this beautiful, mountainous island is perfect for walking enthusiasts and nature lovers, who can explore challenging forest trails, hidden coves and remote beaches with an experienced guide. Rich in biodiversity, Silhouette Island is an important habitat for rare and exotic indigenous trees, flora, birds, insects and reptiles, including many lizard species and giant turtles.

Whichever islands you explore during your holiday in the Seychelles, discovery, wildlife and adventure await you.
