The Maldives is one of the most beautiful destinations in the world for snorkelling, boasting warm, crystal clear blue waters with excellent visibility, an abundance of tropical marine life and hundreds of beautiful coral reefs surrounding the many islands and Atolls. Comprising 1190 coral islands, which form an archipelago of 26 major atolls in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the Maldives offer plenty of secluded spots for snorkelling, which is one of the easiest ways to enjoy the beauty of aquatic life in the shallow Maldivian waters. You don’t even need any experience; just a facemask, mouth air tube and fins. Your instructor will be there to assist you at any time, pointing out the best snorkelling spots and any potential problems such as waves, currents and entry and exit points for caves and reefs. Once you have practiced using your equipment, you will be free to explore the wonders of this spectacular natural aquarium at your leisure.

Swim into the alluring turquoise lagoons, feeling the powdery white sand between your toes. Beautiful coral reef gardens await you, as well as hundreds of brightly-coloured tropical fish. The Maldivian reefs and waters boast over 2,000 species. Watch schools of butterfly fish, lionfish, scorpion fish, clown fish, parrotfish and anemone fish swimming all around you, as far as the eye can see. You are also likely to see eagle rays, manta rays, octopus, hawksbill turtles, giant groupers, moray eels, grey reef sharks, black-tip sharks, whale sharks, the endangered giant Napoleon Wrasse and many other exciting marine species. The diversity of the Indian Ocean’s marine life will both amaze and delight you.

If you feel brave, snorkelling at night is also a magical experience. Watch hundreds of fish and other sea creatures sleeping peacefully amongst the coral reefs. You will also see many nocturnal creatures come out of their hiding places at night, creating a whole new underwater experience. Marvel at the beauty of the different coral species as your underwater flashlight illuminates the reefs, revealing stunning, vivid colours that are not visible in the natural daylight. Coral reefs are the most diverse and beautiful of all marine habitats, and they support thousands of living organisms. Getting up close is a fascinating experience.

The Hurawalhi Island Resort in Maldives is scheduled to open to guests in December, 2016. The luxury hotel has an undersea restaurant, a champagne pavilion, and 90 upscale villas, including 60 Ocean Villas and 30 Beach Villas. The eco-friendly resort has a series of sustainable features including solar panels, a water bottling plant, hot water recovery and an in-house marine biologist.
