Where to stay and where to go in the US Virgin Islands

Fringed by the Caribbean Sea in the south and the Atlantic in the north, the US Virgin Islands are as close to paradise as you can get on a holiday. Those island fantasies of crisp-white sands, clear cyan waters and swaying palm trees - the Virgin Islands literally have them all.

Luxury holidays in the Virgin Islands really are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but you're probably asking: which island do I pick? Well, this depends on what it is you are exactly looking for from a getaway - here is a handy guide.

St Thomas

Perfect for: bustling action and cultural downtowns.

Standing as the bustling heart of the islands, St Thomas boasts all-inclusive resorts, busy harbours, thriving nightlife and great shopping opportunities, all against the backdrop of forest-laden mountains. Charlotte Amalie, the capital of the US Virgin Islands, is a cosmopolis of bars, restaurants and shops, while heritage monuments such as Fort Christian and the golden Frederick Lutheran Church offer moments of colonial history and colour along cobblestone alleyways.

If all of that sounds too hectic, you can always just chill on Magens Bay, a heart-shaped sweep of sand that tends to get busy in the afternoons, or Coki Beach, famed for its multicoloured fish.

As the sun sets, grab dinner at Gladys' Cafe in downtown for tasty jerk pork and fried yellowtail snapper, and then shimmy away to Calypso performances at Coconut Cove. A truly fantastic night out.

St John

Perfect for: nature fanatics and relaxed vibes.

If St Thomas is the bustling older brother, St John is the chilled out, but more beautiful little sister. With two-thirds of it being a protected national park, this is the best bet for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers.

Snorkellers will want to head to Trunk Bay Beach with its 225-yard underwater trail or to Salt Pond Bay Beach. If walking is more your thing, try the Ram's Head Trail, which culminates on a 200-foot-high cliff looking over the Caribbean Sea.

The seafood here is fantastic, so flock to Coral Bay on the eastern side and try either fried fish or the local callaloo (a spinach and okra stew) at Miss Lucy's.

St Croix

Perfect for: oodles of culture.

Over the years, seven countries, including Spain, France and Denmark, have controlled St Croix, and this very much shows in its aesthetic. While it is the biggest of the US Virgin Islands, it still retains the charm of a small town, and with over 200 sites of historical interest, you won't be short of things to do here.

The St Croix Heritage Trail incorporates many of these, with highlights including the dungeons and canons of the Christiansted National Historic Site, the Freedom City of Frederiksted and the Estate Whim Plantation Museum. Alternatively, take a tour around a rum distillery and try some for yourself!

Regardless of which island you pick to spend your luxury holiday in, you are bound to have a fantastic time in what is often regarded as a pearl in the Caribbean. Succumb to the charms of the US Virgin Islands…
