Treking Rain Forest
Duration: Half Day
If you want to get out and about in the great tropical outdoors during your Caribbean holiday in Tobago, a trekking tour through the island’s unique rainforest is one of the most exciting options available.
The beautiful island of Tobago is located close to the South American mainland, which is why it offers such an extensive biodiversity for its small size – both on land and in the water. A third of the island is covered in tropical rainforest, which is the most bio-diverse ecosystem on earth due to the incredible numbers of animal and plant species that can be found here.
After a hearty local breakfast, your knowledgeable, local naturalist guide will take you deep into the oldest and most protected rainforest in the Western Hemisphere, where you will get the chance to see and learn about some of the rarest and most beautiful bird species in the world. Look out for White-tailed Sabrewing Hummingbirds, Ruby Topaz Hummingbirds, Channel-billed Toucans, Blue-crowned Mot Mots, Red-legged Honeycreepers, Blue Tanagers, Cocricos, Green-rumped Parrotlets and many more exotic bird species flying above the forest canopy. This tour is a bird lover’s paradise.
Follow the nature trails past hidden waterfalls and babbling brooks, and immerse yourselves in the beautiful colours, intriguing sounds and wonderful smells of this unspoilt virgin forest. Everywhere you look, you will be surrounded by lush green trees and brightly-coloured native flora, including Heliconias, Bromeliads, Philodendrons and Norantea, as well as an abundance of native animals, reptiles, birds and butterflies.
Depending on the trail you take, you will get the opportunity to see the exquisite Gold and Silver Waterfalls, which are unique because of the mineral deposits that give the rocks their unusual silver and gold colours behind the cascading water, hence the waterfall’s name.
On the way back, you will stop at a small nature reserve, where you can gain another close encounter with the island’s unique, tropical bird, animal and butterfly species. Getting close to Tobago’s native wildlife doesn’t get much better than this.
Sensible trekking shoes and insect repellent are recommended on the tour.
