St Lucia offers a combination of high mountains, lush forests, and pristine beaches. Its bustling capital Castries, sits on the northwest with the dramatic volcanic cones of the Pitons towering in the background. This stunning setting is the perfect base from which to explore St. Lucia or to simply rest and relax. The city’s resorts offer water sports, land sports, golf and many activities for children. Much of the city is newly built, having been destroyed by fires between 1796 and 1948, but there are still historic buildings including the uniquely decorated Cathedral. Cruise ships dock in Castries Harbour and Point Seraphine, which is where you will find duty free shopping. The colourful central market is a real must see attraction, especially on a Saturday, for a vast array of West Indian produce and local crafts.
The varied choice of local excursions means there is something for everyone. There are tropical botanical gardens with nature trails and an opportunity to visit a drive-in volcano to take a dip in the sulphur springs. Castries offers amazing diving, stunning scenery, colourful culture and splendid relaxation.
