Rainforest Escape

Duration: Half Day

rainforest escape

St. Lucia is truly a unique island with miles of alluring beaches surrounding a remarkable mountainous interior filled with acres of lush vegetation and fascinating wildlife. A scenic drive through the mountain community of Fond St. Jacques is the first stop on our wonderful Rainforest Escape tour. Fond St. Jacques is a small rural community, of about 1000 people, situated high up in the mountains. It is popularly said to be the coolest part of the island because of the density of the forest. Upon arriving at our destination in the heart of St. Lucia’s forest reserve your will finally have the chance to be up close and personal with this mysterious wonderland.

The friendly and experienced guides will lead you on the hike through this magnificent and thriving rainforest. St. Lucia is a volcanic island and therefore possesses immensely fertile soils; combined with up to 160 inches of rainfall the rainforest receives per year it is no surprise that the forest is home to an astonishing array of tropical plants. Walk among man-sized ferns and many giant trees while learning the local names of these Caribbean plants or be intrigued by stories of their unexpected medicinal uses. See the many heliconias, red and orange balisier, red saw-tooth ‘lobster claw’, over 200 varieties of hibiscus, orchids such as dendrobium, vanda, scorpion and vanilla, plumbago with its delicate pale blue flowers, allamanda and much more.

Make sure you have an inexhaustible number of shots in your camera because there is animal life to capture as well, from Redneck Pigeons and Hummingbirds buzzing by, to a host of the indigenous birds. Have the opportunity to spy the rare and elusive St. Lucian parrot or Jacquot. This exotic bird is St. Lucia’s national bird and can only be found in this island. In the dark forest interior their features may seem to be completely green as the birds often blend in with the green leafy vegetation, but against the sunlight they display a dazzling pallet of colours including red, blue, purple and yellow. In addition you may be able to even catch a glimpse of a Boa Constrictor.

St Lucia is a beautiful island with endless opportunities to get “off the beaten track”. Although mildly strenuous, this wonderfully exhilarating experience is full of natural beauty to revitalize your mind body and soul to before returning to your hotel.
