Dominican Alps

Duration: Full Day

dominican alps

For all those interested in seeing and exploring the Dominican Republic's heart and heights this is the tour to amaze you and dazzle your senses with all the beauty this country's has to offer.

With us and our experienced guides you'll be experiencing a completely new and different side to this island of sun and sea. This will be a day of joyous encounter with natural surroundings and the discovery of many natural wonders. Beginning with a drive to Santiago whilst including a visit to a cigar factory you will then continue towards Jarabacoa, the site from which Dominican's most famous mountainous zone surges before a landscape of green valleys, clear streams and cascading waterfalls.

You'll be driving from Puerto Plata about 90 miles inland all the way towards the deep rugged soul of this country and its natural riches. On your way here you will pass beautiful vegetation paths filled with tropical eco beauties and amazing fauna.

Once you reach Jarabacoa you will be soon entering the Cordillera Central mountain range and the lush alluvial plains that separate the 3 tallest mountains in the West Indies. This wondrous place is also home to coffee and tobacco plantations owned by families that have dedicated generations of work to these two excellent Dominican exports. Spend some time visiting one of these cigar factories and blend in with the zone's wild beauty.

Thanks to its many water formations this place is also commonly known as the "Land of Eternal Spring" with no less than 18 cascades and waterfalls over chasms that cut deep into this fertile earth.  On this tour you'll have the unique opportunity of bathing in the Jimenoa waterfall's plunge pool, the biggest cascade of all in the region and also the most famous for its striking beauty. Thanks to the topsoil here, said to be the deepest in the world this land is also known as the Caribbean breadbasket as it produces a great variety of apples, peaches and strawberries. It's commonly said that not many tourists make it to the heartland but those few who do find here an untrammelled Eden.

Jarabacoa is the perfect eco tourist's dreamland with its enchanting rivers, the beauty of its big and imposing waterfalls and the bliss of the mountainous green land that surrounds everything. So this is the tour for all true lovers of nature that aren't afraid of getting their boots dirty whilst submerging into a world of exploring and the most amazing natural discoveries.

Amidst all the intake of breathtaking beauty you will be taking a break for lunch in a quaint ranch serving tasty and authentic Dominican dishes...And if this seems too much resting you will soon be engaging in the refreshing activity of shopping for traditional Dominican ceramics at a local factory... definitely the perfect way to end your trip and take something from it that will be worth far more than any souvenir you could find in resorts or at any shop in the city.

Experience a completely different side of the island with a visit to the Dominican Alps. A day of spectacular mountain scenery, green valleys, clear streams and tumbling waterfalls. Begin with a drive to Santiago, where we visit a renowned cigar factory before continuing the drive to Jarabacoa. The highlights of the day are having the time to explore this lovely mountain retreat and taking a ride on a 4-wheel-drive jeep to the towering Jimenoa waterfall with the chance for a cooling dip in the large plunge pool. Snatch a bargain at the ceramic factory. A tasty Dominican buffet lunch (included) is served at the ranch. (This tour includes approx. 20 minutes of walking over uneven ground including 2 wooden bridges; suitable footwear/moderate fitness required. Not suitable for children under 5 years old).
