Tortuga Island Cruises

Duration: Half Day

tortuga island cruises

A holiday in Costa Rica would not be complete without a relaxing cruise to the stunning island of Tortuga (Turtle Island), renowned for its pristine white-sand beaches, swaying coconut palms and clear turquoise waters. A jewel in the crown of the Gulf of Nicoya’s fascinating archipelago, Tortuga Island is quite simply one of the most beautiful islands in the world.

Leaving from the port of Puntarenas, the heart of commercial fishing and the oldest port in Costa Rica, relax and enjoy the scenic views as you cruise the calm waters of the Pacific Ocean. The Gulf of Nicoya is a haven for an abundance of marine life, so there are plenty of opportunities for nature spotting on the way – and on the island itself. The dry tropical forest on Tortuga Island is home to a biodiversity of wildlife, including exotic flora and fauna and a variety of unusual birds. Also look out for turtles, caimans, garfish, manatees and other interesting species.

Eco-friendly tourism is encouraged on Tortuga Island, as are sustainable development projects. One way to enjoy the wildlife without disturbing it is to take a canopy tour through the trees via a zip line, giving you a unique bird’s-eye view of the forest. The forest’s canopy reaches 30 meters high. If you would prefer to keep your feet firmly on the ground, however, there are numerous hiking trails to enjoy instead.

If discovering underwater wildlife appeals to you, there are plenty of opportunities for scuba diving and snorkelling on the island. The crystal waters are surrounded by volcanic reef, which makes Tortuga Island one of the best snorkelling sites on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. Swim amongst the colourful coral reef and tropical fish, and watch out for a myriad of other marine species, including sting rays, sharks, dolphins and octopus.

Tortuga Island is a small piece of alluring paradise that will make your Costa Rica holiday an unforgettable one.

Length of tour: Full Day
What to bring: Cool comfortable clothes, swimsuit, beach sandals, towel, sun block, camera and binoculars.
