The Butterfly Farm

Duration: Half Day

the butterfly farm

Costa Rica’s perfect climate attracts numerous butterfly species, making the country one of the best in the world for butterfly viewing. This excursion will allow you to enter the world of butterflies in the largest commercial butterfly farm in the Western Hemisphere, and the first commercial butterfly farm in Latin America.

A photographer’s paradise, get ready to capture these beautiful, exotic species as they flutter from flower to flower within a large, colourful tropical garden.

At the Butterfly Farm, you will receive a two hour guided tour, where literally hundreds of butterflies can be seen in their natural habitat, feeding mating and laying eggs. A guide will point out the most beautiful species in Costa Rica, and you will get a chance to touch a butterfly’s legs and discover how they hold on to plants.

Learn about the life cycle and natural history of these fascinating insects, their predators, defence mechanisms, the plants they host, and how they are reproduced for purposes such as natural pest control and silk cloth - or simply relax and enjoy their unique beauty. Visit the Caterpillar Room and view the spectacular metamorphosis of the caterpillar forming the pupae, where their bodies change from a caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly. Visitors taking an early morning tour may even be lucky enough to see butterflies emerging from their chrysalides.

Popular with visitors of all ages, and a fantastic addition to any holiday in Costa Rica, this unique and fascinating Butterfly Farm tour will certainly leave you with a deeper understanding and an even greater appreciation of these majestic creatures.

What to bring: sun block, cool comfortable clothes and shoes, camera and hat. Length of tour: Half day.
